Meet Stephanie Huff of Mermaiding SD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Huff.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Stephanie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I found myself downsized after 15 years in market research, which sparked my entrepreneurial spirit. I spent a year exploring ideas and opportunities: What would be fun while bringing joy and magic to others? What can I contribute to make this world a happier place? I had been lost in a world of fluorescent lights and cubicles for too long, feeling that I wasn’t contributing to the “greater good”.

While visiting friends in Saint Thomas to escape the daily grind, I saw “mermaiding” in action. I was enamored. What girl doesn’t want to be a mermaid at some point? What about boys being mermen (or sharks – we have fins)? Light bulb!

Returning to San Diego, I looked to see if anyone else was already in the market for this experience. The opportunity seemed open for someone to seize.

Has it been a smooth road?
I wish I could say everything always goes swimmingly, but how you overcome obstacles pretty much defines a business.

One of the earliest challenges was just making the business exist. I went through the typical routine of consulting advisors and attorneys, setting up an LLC and putting up a web site. But, how do you get people to take a “mermaiding” business seriously? I spent MONTHS contacting major San Diego hotels and event planners, trying to convince them that, yes, this is a thing.

Additionally, how do you shop for the right kind of fins? How do I balance safety and maintaining the fantasy? There’s a whole industry of artists producing these things. Quality, functionality, and pricing vary wildly. It took quite a bit of research and experimenting to sort that out.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mermaiding SD – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Mermaiding SD provides “Mermaid Experiences” for events ranging from children’s parties, to grown-up bachelorette parties, to photo shoots, as well as corporate events. We make mer-wishes happen.

Our children’s mermaiding adventures are available through local hotels including the Omni La Costa and the Hilton San Diego Resort and Spa (open to visitors and locals), as well as private parties.

Mermaiding SD’s mermaids are experienced performers (who also happen to be first-aid and CPR-certified), who bring that unique party entertainment and thematic ambiance to events.

Collaborating with partner businesses — including Fish Pit Sushi, Robin Carby Photography and Yachting San Diego — we can handle all elements of your event, from catering, to photo sessions, to a full day’s yacht party. (Can you tell we’re a fin… er, fan, of supporting local small businesses?)

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What’s not to like? The perfect weather, the beaches, the surf, the community! Where else would a mermaid be in the continental U.S.?
