Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Hamanaka.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I always knew I wanted to help people. That was for certain. I started my college career Pre-Med with the desire of being a pediatrician. That dream faded quickly with the introduction of Chemistry.
I began personal training four years ago and immediately knew I had found my calling. I was helping people. But I was helping them in a way, that I came to realize, was much more fitting to my view on life. Prevention over prescription.
Exercise, if it could be prescribed, would be the most prescribed drug on the planet. And I believe that to my core.
I started my career with an internship at Fitness Quest 10, where I learned from the great, Todd Durkin. From him, I came to the realization that we are all athletes and we should all train as such. Whether it’s on the NFL gridiron or playing with the kids in Pacific Beach, all human movement is the same. We squat, lunge, push, pull and rotate.
I jumped around a few other gyms before landing back in PB where I opened up The Movement Warehouse. With our major focus on form and quality of movement before strength or speed, we safely build up our strength while increasing our mobility and range of motion. Our motto, ‘Strength is meaningless without mobility’ is embodied in every movement, every day.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The sailing has been smooth and the winds are at our back **knock on wood**
I’ve had amazing help from some great people that have allowed this transition from personal trainer to small business owner to be as seamless as possible.
The Movement Warehouse – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We train the athlete inside each of us. Specializing in form and mobility over speed and personal records, our clients are able to “Move Stronger, Move Faster, Move Smarter” for longer which equates to real results that you have earned and truly appreciate.
Our clientele, ranging from doctors to bartenders to business owners, have seen the numerous benefits of group training. Each of them achieving various goals from strength gains to weight loss to decreased pain in movement. In addition to reaching goals we try and make fitness enjoyable. Not a class goes by without fun, energetic music and a handful of laughs. Why would you want to workout in a group if you’re pushing yourself too hard to enjoy some time with your friends? The gym is the new hangout, the new bar, where you can surround yourself with all types of new friends trying to improve themselves and not wake up with a hangover.
From beginners to those who have been training for decades, our programs will challenge even the most fit of athletes. I would put our people up against the best in the county.
I am most proud of the camaraderie and the culture we have created. I know most gyms say that but I truly have never seen another facility where people hang out 45 minutes after class to stay and chat with their new gym BFFs. Our veterans also raise the bar up by helping the newer clients with form instead of judging because someone is slowing down the pace of class.
We have a solid crew and I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
Looking back at where I was a year ago, my proudest moment happens every time I step foot on this turf. We have created something amazing. A safe place where people come to get better, run away from their struggles, or just relieve stress. We all workout for different reasons everyday and I am proud that I can provide that place for San Diego.
A very close second, would be my family seeing what we created. They have always been my biggest supporters and have seen my growth through every stage of my life. I know they are proud of what I have accomplished and that fills my heart more than anything else ever could. Much love to my mom, dad and sister. I’d be nothing without you.
