Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Lisa Kavanagh.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michael Lisa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From a young age, I’ve always had a passion for hair. I think some of that passion has been passed down to me through my Nana who was a hairstylist when she was younger. Growing up, I was lucky to have a mom who fully supported my crazy hair ideas and would help me dye my hair whatever bright color I wanted and an aunt who let me give her highlights when I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and was just trying to mimic what I had seen done in the salon. But hey, luckily it turned out pretty good! Once I graduated from high school, I ended up going to community college for a year, as I thought I wanted to be a teacher. There were so many people who would say being “just a hairstylist” isn’t a real career. While I was in college, I got a job as a receptionist in a salon and quickly realized that’s where I belonged. I dropped out of college, signed up for cosmetology school, and proved the naysayers wrong. I have been doing hair for 13 years, I have a wonderfully supportive and loyal clientele, I own my own salon and I am surrounded by dream team of stylists. I’m so lucky to have such an amazing support system: my husband who is my biggest supporter and my right hand man through this journey, my parents who make my visions come to life with their furniture they have built for the salon, and the rest of my family for their ongoing love and support.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me, one of the biggest challenges has been the transition from co-worker to salon owner. Becoming a salon owner was never something I intended to do, but when the opportunity presented itself I knew it was the right decision and I’ve never regretted it. I think one of the toughest things I’ve had to learn is that you can’t make everyone happy. That lesson has truly made me so thankful for the amazingly supportive team of stylists that I get to work with everyday. I’m so grateful and proud to be the owner of Main Street Salon.

One of my proudest moments is when I became a salon owner. It has pushed me to grow as a person and stylist and I am very grateful for that. I also love being able to help new stylists starting out in the business and I am immensely proud when they are recognized for their hard work and talent.
