Meet Michele and Daniel Schlanbusch of Pilates 4 Women Only and Nimble Monkey Fitness in North Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele and Daniel Schlanbusch.

Michele and Daniel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My lifelong love affair with fitness began over 20 years ago in college when I was introduced to fitness as a freshman in P.E. class. It was love at 1st sight. I loved everything about fitness. I was pre-med at the time. When I met fitness, it changed my life. I knew this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Thus, my journey began.

After college I got certified as a group exercise instructor and personal trainer. I wanted to work with the super fit but also specialize in injury rehabilitation and pre-hab. So I interned/ externed at a wide variety of facilities, traveled all over the world and read volumes of books over the years. I wanted to learn all that I could from the best in the fields of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, myofascial fitness and nutrition for gut health. This lead me to study and certify in Pilates, yoga, and massage. Ten years in I met my beautiful husband, my soul mate. That’s the first time I ever met someone who loved fitness as much as I did!

Our joint passion for weight lifting led us to Russian Kettlebell Sport which combines strength, endurance and flexibility, a perfect balance in every training session. We were mesmerized with kettlebells and loved it so much we trained with Russian coaches to compete on the regional level. Armed with over 40 years of combined experience, my husband and I decided to live out our dream and open two neighborhood fitness studios in North Park, where my husband grew up. First, we opened my Pilates & fitness studio, Pilates 4 Women Only. Then, two years later, we opened his personal training and mat based studio, Nimble Monkey Fitness.

Has it been a smooth road?
No way! The hardest part in the beginning was limiting our services. You have to understand, my husband and I have such a diverse background in fitness, rehab and nutrition. We had a really hard time nailing that down.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Pilates 4 Women Only and Nimble Monkey Fitness story. Tell us more about the business.
Pilates 4 Women Only is a woman centered, results-driven Pilates, acro-yoga and fitness studio. I manage & teach at the studio. My expertise is in weight loss, body toning and post injury rehabilitation. I specialize in making fitness fun, practical and non-intimidating to women. What I love most about my company and what sets us apart is the community my clients and I have cultivated over the years. I’m so proud of my students. They are so kind & supportive to each other. They are so welcoming to every new student. They are so confident and wise in their abilities. I know, without a doubt, that whenever they lift weights they won’t injure themselves. I love my clients, they are so different & so amazing! I love what I do.

Nimble Monkey Fitness is a personal training and small group mat-based fitness studio. I manage and occasionally team teach with my husband. My husband’s expertise is strength training, athletic conditioning, gut health nutrition and active trigger point release. We specialize in core strength rehab because if your core doesn’t work properly, your body starts to fall apart.

We love it when we’re able fix our client’s chronic body aches and pain. We love preparing our athletes physically and mentally for competition. We love teaching our clients how to regain core strength and manage stress so they can enjoy a balanced life.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Technology is playing a huge role as an accountability tool, tracking personal stats and coaching, which is great. I’m curious to see what kind of dent it will make on America’s obesity epidemic.
