Meet Mike Barker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Barker, MBA.

Mike, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated from Monte Vista High School in San Diego in 2003. During my time at Monte Vista, I played varsity football and was class President. I moved to Los Angeles in 2003 and graduated from Long Beach State University with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Communication and an MBA in Marketing from University of Redlands. One night in 2006 I was hanging with a friend Shawntelle Latini at her sorority house in Long Beach, CA and she asked me, “do you want to work the Grammy Awards next week?” I said hell yes! From there, I was employed by Krutchie Entertainment as a Talent and Production Manager, which I continue to work with on a freelance bases.

I have a 14-year career in the entertainment business working with Grammy Award winning artists like Usher, Smokey Robinson, Carbi B, T.I. and actors such as Terrance Howard, Michael B. Jordan and Oprah Winfrey. In addition, my career has allowed me to manage the radio press at the Grammy Awards, American Idol Live Telecast and The BET Awards.

I’m currently an Account Manager and Licensing Representative at Motion Picture Licensing Corporation and has encouraged me to start The Carlos Ramer Scholarship Foundation which will award at $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Monte Vista High School in Spring Valley on May 29. Carlos Ramer was a varsity basketball player that graduated from Monte Vista High School in 2003 and went on to serve in the U.S. Airforce. Carlos Ramer suffered from PTSD and lost his life on September 3, 2018. We did award Savannah Roy at Monte Vista HS with the Carlos Ramer Scholarship of $500 on May 29.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, but I would not change my journey because you never know joy without experiencing pain. In 2008 I became a father and husband. By 2010 I was filing for divorce and was a single parent, raising my son alone without the help of his mother who moved to Texas. At the age of 24, I was juggling a full-time job, going to school full-time and still had to make time for my son because I was all he had. By 2012 my mother Kelli Duncan-Barker moved from San Diego (transferring her from Kaiser) to LA to help me. Eventually, I was awarded full custody of my son Mikey and graduated with my degree.

Motion Picture Licensing Corporation & The Carlos Ramer Scholarship Foundation – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Carlos Ramer Scholarship Foundation was started in 2018 after the loss of Monte Vista High School graduate Carlos Ramer. We will be giving our first $500 scholarship to a graduating senior on May 29 and I’m most proud of keeping a great man’s name alive. What sets us apart is the fact that this is the first scholarship that is in the name of an African-American male graduate. Please see the GoFundMe link below. At Motion Picture Licensing Corporation (MPLC), I ensure that businesses throughout the country have the proper movie licenses to protect them from copyright infringement. On a daily basis, I’m communicating with top level executives, general counsel teams and developing movie licensing agreements.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I have always said that the most successful people are the most humble. And that’s how I want to remain. Success is subjective and my personal definition can change depending on where I am in my life. At this moment in my life, success is progressing in my career and personal finances every year. I simply want to get better in every aspect of my life, every year. I have had the privilege of working with Beyoncé and Janet Jackson, in which both have these women have accomplished so much and still remain humble and kind. The more success I reach, the more humble and kind I want to remain.
