Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Deibler.
Mike, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I first moved to San Diego, I worked as a personal trainer in every form that I could. I would train outside at the beach, in clients homes, and in bigger gyms. After going the more traditional route, I learned what wasn’t working in the health and fitness industry.
The big gyms were all about numbers and rarely cared about the members they were serving. Even the trainers were really seen as just numbers, or at least this is the impression they give off.
Newly engaged and just starting off, I decided to take the scariest plunge in my life. I mean I already proposed to my girlfriend at the time so I should be ready for anything. I decided to venture out on my own and open my own facility. I wanted a control to set systems in place, that lead to clients biggest success they have ever experienced with a training program. This wasn’t about getting people in for a workout. This was about creating a family and support system that would do everything possible to get them where they deserved to be.
When we first opened in 2008, it was just me and one other trainer working out of a 1,000 sq. ft. facility. This wasn’t my dream gym, but it would have to do. We didn’t have any fancy equipment. In fact, I don’t think anything we had was even new. But, I quickly realized that didn’t matter. The bright and shiny equipment will catch people’s attention initially, but I found out that it won’t make people stay and commit. They needed to feel part of something and that is what we did well.
After 5 years in our original facility, we moved on to our current location which is 5,000sq ft. Now we have 15 trainers working with us, physical therapists available on site, and an incredible support team to make sure our clients are successful.
Coming up on our 10 year anniversary, I couldn’t be happier with how we have grown and where will be heading in the future.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Opening your own business is always a struggle. Initially, my wife didn’t think I should do it. When she was growing up, her mother owned a gymnastics gym and saw how hard it was to her and how much time it takes from you. We always have to work incredibly hard to balance work and personal life. With two kids now we don’t have a choice. Work can be consuming but we do our best to be there for each other and our kids.
In the business, there are always challenges. We see gyms open up left and right so we are always pressured to show what makes us different.
Please tell us about San Deigo Premier Training.
We are a private personal training studio. Our core offering is private and group training, but we also have physical therapists that work out of our location as well.
We are known for our incredible customer support. After working in the standard gym for a while, I saw how in personal it was. No one really knew if a member was showing up or not. In fact, it typically was better when members paid and didn’t show up so they gym wasn’t as crowded for the regulars. This is what drives us.
Our studio is more than just a workout. When you come in you will get top-notch training and exercise program design. But we only get to see our clients a few hours a week. And it is the time between workouts that is most critical. We follow up with clients, know their personal goals, and do everything in our power to keep them accountable to achieve their goal. If you miss your workouts, we reach out to you. Maybe you were just sick or maybe you were starting to slip into old habits. Either way, we want to make sure you are staying on track.
Our primary customers are those who have tried other diet and exercise programs before and not been able to stick with it. We help frustrated individuals who haven’t been able to lose weight and be healthier on their own, figure out the best plan that works for their lifestyle.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would have hired a coach or mentor right away. This is a scary thing because it is an investment, and sometimes you don’t have much capital to invest. But, when I think of how hard I worked and how long it took on my own it can be frustrating.
Have a coach help you set up your systems right out of the gate would have excelled us immediately.
