Meet Mike Wydra of Mike Wydra Golf Lessons in Northwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Wydra.

Mike, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Moved here from Chicago at age 13 and took up the game. Played both high school and college golf. Turned professional on my 25th birthday and got the job as the golf coach at UCSD about the same time. Blended a playing, coaching, and teaching career since then. Inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame after 34 highly successful years of coaching. Now concentrating solely on playing and teaching.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Golf coaches in general are overworked and underpaid. Mine was an extreme case of that and the time requirements of the job diminished greatly normal interactions with my family, which was a painful necessity of the job.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mike Wydra Golf Lessons – what should we know?
I give private lessons at the Sorrento Canyon Golf Range, located at 5605 Carroll Canyon Rd. There are a lot of golf professionals who can play, but can’t teach. Also many who can teach, but can’t play. I feel that because I can do both, I bring a unique perspective to my students and not only give them lessons on the range but also playing lessons on the course. As a result, I have had many very successful students and the overwhelming majority progress and improve faster than with other instructors.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My biggest asset and strongest supporter has always been my wife, Terrilee. She has persevered through many long hours teaching and time away from home coaching without which I could have never been anywhere near as successful.
