Meet Mildred Diaz of Lucky Pearl Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mildred Diaz.

Mildred, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a teenager in boarding school in the late 90’s, I would travel back home during the holidays to my family’s small apartment in New York City, where I would often struggle to find a proper surface to complete my homework or focus on the creative projects I was tackling. I never forgot that feeling of wanting to alter my home environment but understanding that there were financial obstacles in place that prevented my family from making a significant change.

Decades later, I created Lucky Pearl Interiors to help our charitable clients overcome those same obstacles and to facilitate their personal growth by removing the physical barriers they have at home. We provide our charitable clients, who are living in neighborhoods that are most affected by income inequality, poverty, scarcity of resources, and crime, with full renovations and interior design services at no cost.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I believe that every small business experiences difficulty at the start of their journey. As the Founder of Lucky Pearl Interiors, it was important to guarantee that each project we took on for our charitable organization did not cost a penny to the families we were helping. For us, it meant ensuring that we were adequately funded and that required financial planning and actively pitching the LPI concept to donors. I was incredibly nervous in the beginning but gained confidence as I went along and was able to develop meaningful relationships with partners and other small businesses who understood our mission and offered their services at no cost. It was quite an education.

Lucky Pearl Interiors – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Lucky Pearl Interiors is a not-for-profit organization that renovates homes for families in need, especially those families with children. We work with each family individually and consider their unique circumstances to create spaces in their homes that are not only beautiful but functional.

Our philosophy and mission center around empowering families through design as it has been shown that adults, and children especially, are susceptible to the emotional stressors that can be caused by home environments that are disorganized and cluttered. We are so proud as a small business to deliver these life-altering services at no cost to the families we serve.

Additionally, LPI offers interior design and E-design services to clients across the United States whose donations directly help fund our charitable projects. For all our clients, we leverage our experience of years in project management to coordinate all aspects of each renovation from design to installation.

What were you like growing up?
At ten years old, I was already 5’6”, and nearly a foot taller than every other student in my fifth-grade class. I felt so awkward, so to escape the feeling, I became an avid reader. Reading new books, delving into stories, and meeting new characters was such a delightful escape. Classmates would find me wandering the halls, nose in a book, and bumping into lockers and open doors. Reading helped unleash my imagination, and I have spent my time since creating the life I visualized back then.
