Meet Milly Reed of Gaslamp Sculpting Studio in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Milly Reed.

Milly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been an artist. I decided several years ago I wanted to study figurative sculpture. I researched schools locally and nationally. I found my bests options for the techniques I wanted to learn were attending workshops and studying under specific artists. Although I would love to attend The Florence Academy of Arts Sculpture program in Florence, I’ve gotten the privilege to study with some amazing instructors here in the US. and internationally.

I’ve loved traveling and learning. But I’ve always loved coming home to San Diego. I have had an art studio at the Brokers Building Downtown for 5 Years now. I just returned from Italy at the beginning of the year ready to open the Sculpting Studio very much like where I’ve been studying. I am very excited to see where this next year leads with many projects coming in the future.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No this has been a road with me starting over a few different times. A couple years ago while planning to go study in Florence hoping for a grant to come thru ultimately I didn’t receive it and that put me in a whole new position of figuring out how I was going to orchestrate all of this all on my own. It made me grow up a lot. But quitting was going to be much more difficult to deal with than starting over. And when it’s in your heart ultimately you must go for it or you’ll never really be happy.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Gaslamp Sculpting Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
