Today we’d like to introduce you to Miriam Castaneda.
Miriam, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started SweetLittleNook close to two years ago. I started this page at a time when I wanted to learn about social media management. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with the new page, but a friend told me to base it off something that I loved doing. I decided to base it off coffee shops because I love spending time in them. They are my favorite place to get work done, hang out with my friends, and just taste new coffee. At the time, I remembered I looked for an Instagram page that I could follow that highlighted all the coffee shops San Diego had to offer, but I had no luck. So, I decided to do the page myself. I mean I was already hanging out at coffee shops every weekend, now I could become a resource for all those people who were like me.
Now, as SweetLittleNook is growing, I see how big the coffee community is and how many people loved them just as much as I do. I started seeing pages doing the same but many would give up. I’ll admit there were times I thought maybe I should give up too, but when people would message me about how helpful my page was or tag me in pictures of a shop they found through me, it made me excited to keep going. The fact the I kept going and I was consistent is what has to help me grow my page. It also helps that San Diego has such an amazing selection of cafes, so it makes it fun.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ll admit it hasn’t always been easy to keep up with the page. For the first year or so, I would sometimes go weeks or months without posting and I would consider stopping the page altogether. It felt like no one really benefited from my page and there was no real reason to keep up with it. It also got to be very frustrating to keep up with all the new coffee shops, because I felt like I had to be one of the first pages to post about it. So, I decided to step away from it for a while.
I think taking a break helped me realized I wasn’t forced to do this, and this is supposed to be a fun pass time I have because I truly do enjoy visiting new shops. I took the pressure off wanting to serve a purpose to doing this because I enjoy it. It wasn’t until six months ago that my page grew. Still, to this day, it ever becomes overwhelming I take a step back and reassess my goals + my wants. And if I ever feel like I need a break I take it without feeling bad about what might happen if I don’t “keep up” with it.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with SweetLittleNook – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
SweetLittleNook is an Instagram page, and soon a blog, that hopes to promote local coffee shops in Southern California but mainly San Diego. I feature original content from my personal experience at every coffee shop. I do not do personal reviews because my main purpose is for people to discover them through me, get to know them and build their own opinion once they visit.
I think I am most proud of how far this page has come. I love that it has become a resource for people to find new shops. I don’t think there are many Instagram pages that do the same, so I am happy to know people look for SweetLittleNook when they want to find one.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are currently designing a blog for SweetLittleNook. This website will feature city guides, a coffee blog and event listing that will hopefully become a resource for coffee lovers in Southern California. We are very excited to not only focus on pictures but thoroughly provide information about all the coffee shops Socal has to offer. We hope to become a one-stop resource for all things coffee. Not only discussing shops but give tips and advice on our blog.
We are very excited to see it live!
