Today we’d like to introduce you to Misha Skova.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in the Czech Republic when it was still Czechoslovakia, a Communist country. In my mother’s arms, my family fled the country while I was an infant. We sought refuge in Austria, in a camp near Salzburg, where we spent two years waiting for acceptance to the USA. My mother’s dream was to leave communism, so she and her family could have the freedom to grow and accomplish a well-lived life.
After three years in Boston, we settled in California — the weather is ideal and the beaches felt perfect for us.
After finishing school, I modeled for about three years. I traveled around the world and I lived in places like Cape Town, Barcelona, Germany, Greece, and NYC. Modeling was not my passion; I wanted to be creative and design. I wanted something that I could call my own and grow.
I am the owner of Skova.co and co-owner of lavieboheme.com. I launched Skova in 2008 as a jewelry company. I created my own designs by hand, with wax and molds. We manufactured in the USA and the business evolved into direct sales with SKOVA Soul accessories in 2011.
Alongside Skova, I launched another brand called La Vie Boheme Yoga. My goal with La Vie Boheme Yoga is to create beautiful, unique yoga mats – www.laviebohemeyoga.com.
I am very proud Skova has now evolved into a beach lifestyle brand, with ornately printed travel towels, Skova’s distinct round towels, picnic rugs, pillows, and resort wear: www.skova.co
Has it been a smooth road?
Yes, of course, there are struggles in business with lots of ups and downs, with challenges along the way. I can adapt, change, and grow my business as necessary. Over the years, Skova morphed from solely a jewelry line to include beach/resort accessories.
In the beginning, I self-funded Skova. When the first large orders came in, I was grateful but challenged me financially. Still today, there are times I have to go out of pocket as my own investor.
The second challenge I faced (and still do face) was how to find a good team. Sometimes, one has to try out a few employees ignored to find the right fit — that star. I don’t like to let employees go; I dislike that part of the business. It is always healthier all the way around to move on from an unmotivated employee or from someone who isn’t right for the job or may even be toxic to the company.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Skova LLC – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I have my hands in all aspects of both my companies. I do the marketing, photography, social media, website and search engine optimization (SEO). Also, I focus on sales, distribution, logistics, imports, and product development — the list goes on. I have to be able to do it all! I know that all of these components go into developing and managing one’s own business.
My number one satisfaction is when women wear Skova pieces and use our products. I take great satisfaction seeing shots in magazines of celebrities wearing our accessories. Skova is available from major retailers including Urban Outfitters, Saks, Shop Bop, Revolve, and in some amazing stores!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love about Encinitas are its beautiful beaches, the low-key lifestyle — there is a yoga studio on nearly every corner! Encinitas offers great food and fun, social spots. There is a vibrant, creative community here with positive energy, which I find inspiring. I can’t think of anything negative about it, not at this moment, anyway!
