Meet Mitch McGinley of Happy-U Yoga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitch McGinley.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My wife Karson and I had a dream of owning a yoga studio, and a little over 5 years ago that dream became a reality. Karson had been introduced to yoga at a young age. Her mother Jan has owned a fitness studio outside of NYC for the past 30+ years, and Karson and Jan had created a bi-coastal yoga and coaching business that was rooted in positive psychology. They called it HAPPY-U, which stands for a Holistic Approach to Positive Psychology and Yoga.

So when we purchased the studio, Happy-U made perfect sense to turn into a brand. Over the past 5 years, we have grown and evolved into a community that is thriving and striving to create positive change in the world. Whether it is through our daily yoga classes, our teacher training that is also rooted in Positive Psychology, or our affiliations with organizations such as Prison Yoga Project, our mission is to raise the vibration of the world one breath at a time.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing good is ever easy. We’ve faced many of the same challenges every small business owner has faced as they’ve struggled to realize their dreams. We had a terrible falling out with a dear friend and colleague. We went through two difficult pregnancies, and now how two incredible children, both of whom are small and needs lots of care and attention.

Splitting our time between all of these things is difficult, and there is seemingly never any time off, or away. We’ve made plenty of mistakes in terms of both choices we’ve made and choices we didn’t make. But in the end, we wouldn’t be where we are if all of those things hadn’t happened, and so for that, I am grateful.

Happy-U Yoga – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Happy-U is a yoga studio and training center that focuses on teaching yoga as both a modern science and an ancient philosophy. None of our classes are heated and we offer several different styles ranging from slow and gentle to fast and strong. We pride ourselves on customer service and being true to our purpose. We aren’t trying to be a gym. We aren’t so much about getting a workout.

We focus on feeling good, recognizing that each and every person is unique, and sometimes lying still for an hour and focusing on your breath can be as challenging as you need that day. What sets us apart is how authentic and welcoming we are. Its a family business and we love and care about the community, and that community returns the love 1,000,000 times over. It’s an uplifting place, a safe space, and an environment that brings out the very best of our true nature.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When I was young we had a magnet on our fridge that said: “Success is not what your bank account says, it’s how wonderful a human being your child is”. That has always stuck with me. Having gone through plenty of financial ups and downs in my life, and being happy and sad through both, success has very little to do with money for me.

We also don’t make a lot of money. But every day that I’m at work, someone stares into my soul and tells me how grateful they are for this place, and for that, I feel that we have achieved success. We are seeking to make the world a better place, and every day that someone walks out feeling better, we know we’ve contributed to that change.
