Meet Monica Watson of Berlin Skin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Watson.

Monica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Berlin Skin was born solely out of my own journey in trying to figure out the issues I was having with my skin in my early 20’s. After years of trial and error, I found incredible healing through plant-based, natural ingredients and by adopting a more holistic lifestyle. In 2016 I launched Berlin Skin with a vision of helping others to simplify their skincare routines by using only the best ingredients that are good for both body and mind. Fast forward to 2 years later and we have a line of 4 facial products and one body oil. We have an incredible community of customers and retailers who support our mission and I’m blown away by all the support we’ve received so far.

Has it been a smooth road?
There have been several challenges along the way, and I recognize that there always will be; it’s apart of the process and I’ve learned to embrace them. I had no idea how to get started in the beginning: all I knew is that I had an idea, I wanted to help people, and I wanted to create something beautiful.

I almost gave up in the beginning when I couldn’t find suppliers who matched our commitment to sustainability and quality. One of the hardest obstacles was finding the right recyclable glassware for our precious formulas. Luckily we found an amazing partner who provides us with high-quality glassware from Europe that protects our products from getting damaged or compromised by sunlight.

I’ve learned that when there’s a will. there’s a way! There have been so many times where I’ve felt frustrated and defeated, and yet my passion and belief in what we’re doing has kept me committed to the business. I’m so grateful that I didn’t give up in the beginning because I absolutely love what I get to do every day! It’s been 100% worth it and the obstacles have only made me more grateful for what we have in our little company.

Intended to complement the minimalist’s lifestyle, our products prove that achieving beautiful, smooth skin doesn’t have to be difficult. We believe that a skin care routine should be a relaxing, uncomplicated experience that nurtures the natural environment of our skin.

Made in only small batches, Berlin Skin products are multi-use and are formulated with only the highest quality, sustainably sourced ingredients: packed full of wildcrafted, organic botanicals and oils.

We’re committed to sustainability and encouraging others to approach life through a slower, more content sense of well-being. Our products have only the good stuff in them, they’re never tested on animals, and our packaging is recyclable. We’re committed to run our business in a responsible way that helps (not harms) the environment, people, and animals.

Since the beginning, we’ve been giving back a portion of our profits to Remember Nhu, a non-profit organization who’s mission is to fight sex-trafficking through prevention around the world. Overall, we want people to experience beauty, luxury, and a sense of peace through the experience of using our products and through the ethos of our brand.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
We launched our business in Portland, OR which was an amazing city to start out in. The small business community is incredibly welcoming and there are tons of resources for people who are just beginning. I’m really grateful that we launched out of Portland, and we still do a lot of business up there.

Overall, Oregon is way more tax-friendly than California, so moving our business down here was a bit of sticker shock. However, we love being in San Diego and we’re grateful to live and run our business in such an amazing city.

We’ve been welcomed with friendliness, kindness, and encouragement from other small business owners and entrepreneurs. It’s inspiring to live in a community where “craft” is valued and people recognize the value in shopping and supporting small business.
