Meet Monique Frey of Pret Gourmet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Frey.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Monique. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a life-long connoisseur of food and hosting, I have always enjoyed cooking lavish meals for friends and family. After working for many years in the hospitality and service industries, I decided to take this interest to the next level by pursuing a Culinary Arts Degree from Le Cordon Bleu. Not knowing where my technical training would take me, I honestly just wanted to know “what the professionals did!”

Upon graduating, I relocated to sunny San Diego and launched my business Pret Gourmet. The basis of my business model is to deliver each dish and a customized menu with the feeling and love of a home-cooked meal. For the past seven years, my team and I have catered a wide array of gatherings, ranging from weddings and intimate dinner parties to large corporate and business events. A chef first and business-woman second, I am always looking for healthy, fresh, and seasonal cuisine to add to my menus and spend my free time sampling new, popular items in our test kitchen.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I find myself in the position that I’m sure many small-business owners find themselves in. I simultaneously run my business, create marketing campaigns, oversee the preparation of each menu, and serve and host at parties with assistance from my staff. I put all of my time and energy into creating a unique culinary experience for each of my clients.

Of course, there are other catering companies to choose from, but I believe in making sure that I am the right fit for each specific client’s needs. Rather than fear competition, I work closely with my contemporaries in the catering world and we inspire each other to go above and beyond in each job.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Pret Gourmet story. Tell us more about the business.
Pret Gourmet is a passion project of mine that grew into a flourishing full-time business. When I cater to an office, venue, or a private home, I want the host to feel like a guest at their own event. My clients are able to enjoy their parties and meetings, while food and beverage are served seamlessly throughout.

What sets us apart from “similar” companies is our dedication to complete customization. Each ingredient in every dish is hand-picked to match a client’s needs and taste palate. Rather than working off a pre-set menu, I prefer to speak with a client to learn more about their taste and what their vision is for their event and their guests.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Rather than luck, I am for thankful for the life experiences that have led me to this point in my journey today. I am lucky however to have worked with such supportive people who share my passion and to have met many wonderful clients who constantly challenge me to raise the bar.
