Meet Myong & Kim Hong of Prodigy Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myong & Kim Hong.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It was year 2002 in San Diego, California and I was a game tester for a big video game company. Few of my friends and I were always passionate about film. We finally decided to make some purchases on computers, cameras and gears and make a small business and start shooting film. We were young and didn’t have much guidance so to make extra money we started shooting weddings. Few years later, my friends ventured off into their own business but I found that I really love shooting weddings. I made friends with some of my favorite wedding photographers and was lucky that they shared with me some of their photography skills. I learned as much as I could about photography and cinematography and since then made many friends through it and even traveled to different countries for it.

I moved back home to Guam 2008 and continued my photography and video. That’s where I met my wife, Kimberly and thanks to her being part of our business, Prodigy Studios, our workflow became more efficient which helped our business grow. Guam is a beautiful small island where everybody knew everybody so we became quite popular and our business grew.

It’s now 2017 and we have a baby boy, MyongJin. My wife never lived out of Guam and we came to visit San Diego last year. She fell in love with San Diego so we packed up and moved.

It’s been an exciting ride. Coming from a place where we were so busy and in high demand to starting from scratch and not having any network here in San Diego, it’s a little nerve wrecking. At the same time, it’s also very exciting and am looking forward to the new adventures that awaits for us.

Some people believe that if you put all your energy into one thing then you can really excel at it. This might be true but life is too exciting to just do one thing. In the end you only regret what you haven’t done so do as much as you can.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Everything in life has a challenge to overcome. Some are learning to work with complaining customers and how it’s more important to be professional than to let our emotions take over. Some are going through technical difficulties when a camera doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to. Gears breaking during shoot and images not coming out as you want it to. Another challenge is taking on too many gigs and not being able to give your clients the final product in timely manner. This one is definitely a good obstacle to have but if you don’t meet your deadlines then it can back fire on you.

Prodigy Studios – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Prodigy Studios is a husband and wife team company specializing in wedding photography and videography. We also photograph families, babies, engagements and events. We also create commercials for small businesses and help them create their brand. We are proud to say that with wedding photography and videography, we are one of the fastest in giving our clients their product but this doesn’t mean we put in less effort. The best thing about doing what we do is we have made some amazing friends along the way and traveling to new places. What sets us apart from some of the others is that we personalize our work and do all the work ourselves. You get who you pay for.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My definition of success is very simple, if you can live loving what you do and it makes you happy then you’re successful. This doesn’t mean just making money from the craft that you have but doing whatever you are doing, you do it with pride and with the best of your ability. When I was young I worked at a fast food restaurant and I always did my best. I joined the Guam National Guard and did it with pride. I even tested some video games with as much focus I can put in. Money comes and goes but your pride and living with no regret is priceless.
