Meet Myrna Steinbaum of VeniExpress

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myrna Steinbaum.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Myrna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started as a Phlebotomist in 1989 before the state licensure was out for the position. My first job as a phlebotomist was at Palomar Medical Center and through the years I would witness elderly people coming in for blood draws at all hours of the day, they would come through our outpatient laboratory or the emergency room.

Those that came to our outpatient lab would always be accompanied by someone and those that came in through the emergency room would come by ambulance and as soon as the Dr. would check their blood results they would then send the patient home via ambulance, I started thinking “THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY”. One day I was drawing blood from an elderly lady while and during the process she began to tell me how she had been praying that someday there would be a company that could come to her because her insurance didn’t cover the ambulance ride and it cost her $200, at that moment I knew I had to start the journey.

I began to pray and honestly, I knew it was going to take miracle, and through the years I started developing all the skills I in my position to one day start a mobile phlebotomy company. I worked in management, and taught phlebotomy for several years. In 2010 I knew it was time to start VeniExpress, I consulted my husband with the idea and he was very supportive of my decision, so I left my position as a field supervisor and began in the back room of our home, I wore all that hats in sales, admin, specimen collection and began to line up all that I needed to get the credentials that would give VeniExpress what it needs to reach its highest potential and that meant getting a medical director. Soon after the doors opened slowly for the first four years, I had a patient every other month and the years following the company slowly grew, long story short I have since moved from the back of my home to a very conservative office (1) to now 7yrs later we are in a corporate building occupying over 17 offices employing over 50 employees and sub-contractors and servicing 2,300 patients a month covering most of southern ca and AZ. I am truly blessed to have been given the opportunity to do what I love, I often tell my staff it takes a village and we are truly grateful to have so many wonderful people that work with us to provide a great service for those in need.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My husband was very supportive; however, in the first four years, I did not receive a paycheck because every penny I made I put back into this business that ultimately ended up losing our home to foreclosure. Times were tough but since then we have recovered in our finances and are now living in our new home.

Please tell us about VeniExpress.
We are a mobile phlebotomy team that goes out to patients’ homes and get their blood work completed. Once we have completed the blood draw we take the specimens to the laboratory where they run the ordered test and provide results to the physician.

We pride ourselves in providing great customer service and specialize in specimen integrity. (knowing how to preserve the integrity of a specimen is key for the doctor receiving accurate results). We have a quality assurance department that audits our phlebotomist and makes sure they are always keeping a clean and safe environment.

Another thing that sets us apart is our Orientation/Training. we really take our time to train any new phlebotomist by going over our VeniExpress expectations and how to conduct phlebotomy in a complaint way.

-We service many HomeBound patients that cannot get themselves to a laboratory for blood work.

-We service anyone that does not want to wait at the laboratory for a blood draw (we can service them at home, work or any location that is convenient for them).

-We Biochemistry clients.

-Mobile DNA paternity.
