Today we’d like to introduce you to Najah Abdus-Salaam.
Najah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began my path as a healer in 2008, while living and working in New York City. I started practicing yoga, and it changed me. It changed the way I felt about myself, which changed the way that I felt for the world. I had a new sense of compassion for all things, and knew it was my time to step into the path of a healer. I was introduced to Acupuncture in 2003, with a gift card for a treatment. I had no idea that once I laid down on the table, that my experience would have been so profound. I knew then, at the age of 21 that I had to learn this medicine. But I still was not quite finished with my undergrad at the time – I took a break from college to try high-fashion modeling in New York City. So I put Acupuncture on the back burner until I felt the time was right.
It wasn’t until 2008, while working at the top outdoor advertising agency of the time, that I felt the need to make a big life change. New York was not the place that I felt that my heart could soar, in the way that I knew it would if I moved across country to San Diego. So off I went, and enrolled in the oldest, largest school in the country to study the medicine that I fell so deeply in love with. After 4 and 1/2 years of non-stop grad school – which included 4,000 hours of study, 1000 hours of internships, and to sit for what is known as the most difficult state board in the country – to pass to become a Licensed Acupuncturist. After graduating, I began Multi-Dimensional Healing as a way to combine all the things that I love and love to share with others – Acupuncture, Yoga, Sound Healing, and Feng Shui.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road. It has been anything but smooth. The one thing I was not ready for was the sheer number of other Acupuncturists in San Diego. In the beginning, everyone that I spoke with seemed to already have an Acupuncturist. So business in the beginning was very slow. Every now and again, I would get a new patient, and then I would worry about how to keep them coming to me as a patient. But that was not the right approach for me. I had to trust the process, and continue to be diligent.
Please tell us about Multi-Dimensional Healing.
I’m most proud of the sound healing events that I have been so fortunate to create with my best friend, Cheryl Davies. She and I are both Acupuncturists, and graduated at the same time. So as new Acupuncturists, we designed events to hold around town that combined Acupuncture with Sound healing – as a way to get out into the community and to help as many people as we could. The events we call AcuRhythms have been a great hit, and we have been spreading what we have created into North County San Diego, and Orange County. New York City, Long Island, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Each event is tailored to the attendees needs, but also to any seasonal changes, or astrological changes that may be present. We work with a wonderful sound healer, Jazmine Amelia, that plays various sound healing instruments, like the crystal singing bowls, gongs, tuning forks, chimes and a host of other instruments.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think that I would change a thing. Each obstacle that I faced served a purpose – a learning tool to make me a better business woman, a better practitioner, and a better human.
