Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathalie Gras and Kylie James.
Nathalie is originally from France and moved to the US over 20 years ago. Kylie is from Australia and moved to the US about four years ago. They are two Scripps Ranch Moms who met through their daughter’s school. They are both very crafty and our creativity brought them to decide to do something together. After bouncing ideas off each other, Kylie showed Nathalie her friend’s sleepover business in Australia. Nathalie fell in love with the idea and planted the seed of starting a sleepover business in San Diego together. They realized there were no similar businesses in Southern California and they saw an opening in the market. They had been going to so many of the same birthday parties, all at the same sort of places – jumping centers, arcades, etc., that they were excited to provide children and families with a fresh, fun and unique option – indoor glamping sleepovers!
They sourced their materials from Europe and Australia and started building their prototypes. It took about 6 months to get everything done (sewing, cutting wood and building frames in their garages…). They officially launched Dreamcatcher Sleepovers in March 2018.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been quite a smooth process (and super fun) from the idea stage to launch. We haven’t experienced any real struggles, besides some minor technical adjustments when building the prototypes.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dreamcatcher Sleepovers story. Tell us more about the business.
Dreamcatcher Sleepovers, which was officially launched in March 2018, offers six different themes for rental, ranging from fairies to woodland world to camouflage and more. Each standard package comes with five tents, five mattresses and their mattress covers, breakfast trays, lanterns, lights and bunting, a rug and a pretend campfire, as well as a dental kit and eye mask or dog tag necklace for each child. The host child also receives a special gift, especially if the occasion is a birthday. For an additional fee, parents can also add on more tents if needed, as well as activity kits. We also offer a range of add-on themed packages and fun activities. We are currently servicing the San Diego Metropolitan Area.
We are known for the uniqueness of our concept, and our customers rave about the aesthetic, the attention to detail and all the magic we bring to our client’s children and their friends.
We are proud to bring joy to the children and their parents. The reactions we get when they see the setup for the first time is priceless! (we get hugged a lot, and even see tears of joy sometimes!) Having children of our own, we know that a lot of parents are a bit overwhelmed by having to plan a sleepover for their child. Between, the activities, the food, the decorations, and the sleeping arrangements, the task can be quite daunting. We want to make the experience a little easier for everyone by alleviating the stress of planning the logistics. Our team shows up the day of the event and sets up an amazing themed campout. Then, we come back the next day to take down and pack. That way, parents can focus on the food and the activities only, and the kids have the time of their lives. We were the first to bring the concept to Southern California.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
There is always a demand for children’s parties (birthdays, girls or boys scouts, fun with friends and more!). Kids love to have sleepovers with their friends, and parents love the set-up and decorations to be done for them. We can only see the business growing and expanding in the future.
