Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathasha Vargas.
Hi Nathasha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I became an esthetician with the intention of doing something with make-up, but shortly after starting my esthetician program, I was reminded of how much fun it was to do face masks (I loved to DIY my own face masks in middle/high school), and I began to love facials. I loved the fact that I could help others with their skin issues and help them relax after a stressful day or week.
After receiving my license, I set out to look for a job at a spa, but sadly, most companies were looking for someone with experience. I began to do facials on friends, family and referrals, all from a spare room in my home. I finally found a job at a very popular waxing chain. We were not really taught much about waxing in school, so I did not think that I would end up liking it as much as I did. I learned so much, and I truly loved working there and will forever be grateful for that opportunity. I love waxing now!
I decided to open up my business in the middle of COVID-19 on impulse. My parents no longer wanted me to bring anyone into our home, and I still had some clients asking me when I would be able to take them in. I decided to look around and found a suite close to me and I decided to go for it. That was the start of my business!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge has been the shutdowns from COVID-19. I opened at the end of September when the industry had briefly opened up again. I had a feeling that there could be another shutdown at the end of the year, but I decided to take the leap and see where it would take me. Shutting down in December was sad, especially since I was getting some traction, but I had enough saved just in case of another shutdown, and I was able to keep my suite until we reopened at the end of January this year.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

I believe that it takes no effort to be kind to others, and I always do my best to be positive.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One of the most important lessons I have learned along this journey is that it takes a lot of work to keep a small business afloat! I never thought that I would be someone who owned something because I have always been more on the shy side, but I am learning so much and getting over certain feelings of fear and embarrassment. I am doing my best to embrace this process and see where this business can take me!
