Today we’d like to introduce you to Neisha Hernandez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
22 years ago, we opened our doors teaching dance classes. 12 years ago, we added a Music Department, founded a 501c3 nonprofit ballet division called The Chula Vista Ballet, and purchased the property to house all of the artistic fun! At this time, we began to focus more on programming beyond the arts. Examples are our Leadership Training for Students, Ongoing Education for Staff, Community Service, and Character Development. Most recently, we opened our second location in the Arts District of the Historic Liberty Station.
Has it been a smooth road?
In the first ten years, our Eastlake community was growing by thousands of families each year. As a community of new housing developments, there were hundreds of homes with no businesses to serve the children who lived in them. This meant that our school was scrambling and indeed struggling to keep up with the demand for classes. We had to expand three times in an attempt to create enough space. It left us spread thin and exhausted. It was difficult to focus on serving our customers well and building our leadership. Then we had the famous economic crash and the building of homes stopped. Finally, the pace leveled out and we were able to focus on our studio culture.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Neisha’s specializes in teaching dance classes and music lessons to children ages 18 months to 18 years of age. In dance, we offer ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, and musical theater. In music, we offer piano, voice, guitar, violin, and cello. In the arts, we are most well-known for our strong ballet training. We have launched kids into careers on Broadway, on TV, and into Ballet Companies. Beyond the arts we are known for our positive programming. I am most proud of our established strong culture. Concepts such as All Kids are Born Worthy and Character Counts are taught in class each day. This culture helps us to launch kids into other careers that we are equally proud of, such as Brian Surgeons. Our affiliations with More than Just Great Dancing and Youth Protection Advocates in Dance help us to focus on the artist before the art, the dancer before the dance, and the musician before the music. We don’t train kids to make great artist, we teach dance and music to make great kids!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love doing business in our city. One of the things I tell those starting out is to find an area that needs to be served and fill that need. Success looks different to everyone so keep your eyes on your own version of what success is and do not be distracted. For us, that is providing meaningful employment while serving our community and uplifting kids! We exist to Encourage Kids to Lead Inspired Lives!
