Meet Nikena Allen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikena Allen.

Hi Nikena, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started braiding hair on my Barbies when I was 5 yrs. old. I admired my mother’s beauty techniques and was following behind her. She taught me how to braid and from there I wanted to do it every chance I had gotten. When I was 14, I would braid my friend’s hair on my grandmother’s porch through middle school. I’ve always had a strong passion for it. As I began to get older, I wanted to transition to the other side of the industry. This brought me to the interest of selling hair with my ultimate goal being the owner of a Beauty Supply store.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It absolutely has not been as easy road. I have gotten discouraged numerous times. I’ve had some vendors refuse to do business with me unless I spent a huge amount with each purchase. I’m also a mom of 2 boys and a lot of times my responsibility for them would slow down my production. With that, I really had to zone in and build my company inch by inch over time. Though I never gave up and I never will.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I got started selling hair as I felt I wanted to provide quality hair for women while making it affordable. I went on to research vendors trying out different hair. I was testing for shedding, softness, quality, and how many great uses were possible before the hair began to change. Finally, after 2 years I found my perfect selection. I worked other jobs and side jobs to make extra money. Whilst doing so I used every bit of my extra funds to build my company from the ground up.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was when I learned how to attach extensions to my Barbie’s hair. I was 6 yrs. old when I discovered how to do that. From there my imagination was limitless and my passion never died.
