Today we’d like to introduce you to Nili ‘Isabelle Ringer’ Goldfarb.
Hi Nili, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started in roller derby back in 2005. Initially, it was a hobby, something I could put some of my energy into when I was in my 20s. Over time, it became a great passion, enabling me to travel all over the world with the sport. At that time, I had a different line of work. Now, 16 years later, not only has roller derby and roller skating become my career, but the Derby United facility we have built here in San Diego has become my life’s work. This skating facility is has been a source of inspiration to skaters and entrepreneurs all over the world. I feel very proud of that.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been a lot of struggles and obstacles along the way. They come in all shapes and sizes. The thing about any entrepreneurial venue is that you have to be extremely resilient. Some challenges are short-lived, just one hard day or one big bill that has to be handled. Some challenges are long and it can take months or years of weathering a tough circumstance to make it out the other side.
Any single obstacle can be the end of the entire path. Being able to outlast these obstacles and all the forces that can work against what you want is part of “making it.”
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the owner and operator of an outdoor roller skating establishment in Encanto, Derby United. I have been a part of the growth and development of the sport of roller derby since 2005. As a business owner and an active member of the roller skate community for nearly two decades, I am always looking for ways to bring joy and fulfillment both to myself and to the lives of those around us.
Through roller derby and roller skating, we have brought joy to San Diegans and folks all over the world. Roller skaters and organizers in roller derby throughout the US and abroad often contact me to let me know our property and skating programs are an inspiration. I am most proud that my work can lead not only to my own satisfaction and accomplishments but can also to the elevation and accomplishments of others.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
San Diego is the most perfect city for roller skaters. With gorgeous year-round weather, innumerable skate spots around the beaches, parks, waterfront, city streets and specialty skating establishments, this city is a roller skater’s dream. Spending most of my life in New England, I have a deep appreciation for San Diego and all it has to offer. I do not ever intend to leave this city.
