Meet Olga Belen Macías

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olga Belen Macías.

Hi Olga, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello and thank you for having me. My name is Olga Belen Macias, and I was born and raised in beautiful San Diego.

Chatu started in the months after the pandemic broke out. I’ve always wanted to start a small business, and I have tried in the past and failed. My parents are small business owners, so I have been around it my whole life; they truly inspire me. I wanted something to call my own. I use to work three jobs, and when the pandemic hit and I stayed with none, money was short so I had to be careful. I knew it was time to try once more. I remember having a notebook and asking myself what would I provide and how would that make a person feel. I wanted people to feel beautiful, empowered and confident, knowing they had something hand-detailed by someone. Even if it’s something materialistic, I wanted them to feel their own power in choosing a design that suited and represented them. I listed my own little mission statement.

After I choose a theme, I worked on what I considered the backbone of my business. I want to say my dad using a tejana when he went back to his home country was always in the back of my mind but it wasn’t clear on why until I needed a hat. While hat shopping, nothing would fully convince me, so I ended up customizing my own hat. There it was. Everything else just aligned. I was able to find providers, travel with my mother (my sidekick) to find some of the best quality of hats and trims. Everything flowed, the right people showed up and the opportunities were in perfect timing. I’m very thankful for the other small businesses I have met, those have been able to work with and those that root for me from afar.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, I feel like every business is a bit rocky before we get the hang of it. I did have some struggles. I would not met deadlines, the material or design did not come out as expected. I would forget orders! You name it! It was chaotic. In the mist of it all, I will say I have some of the most understanding and supportive clients/friends/family. Thank you, those small details don’t go unseen. I understood this whole process was all part of my growth and I continue to learn.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
There’s an inspiration behind every hat. I could have some very out-of-the-box designs and others that are essentials for your wardroom. I know it sounds cliche, but most of my designs come from the heart… and that does something. We all see it when my clients feel a certain way when wearing one. I’m their biggest fan. I get excited when I create and when I see others (businesses) create, that’s magical. I can proudly say my hats have been worn by all ages and have been shipped across the states. I’m very proud for not giving up. I’m forever thankful.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I get questions on my business name. My father has unique nicknames for us. Mine was Chatu. As a child, I would feel embarrassed because it wasn’t your typical nickname. I would ask my dad what it meant and to this day, he just laughs and never responds. When I’m home late mornings, I hear him yell (loudly) “Good morning Chatu” across the hall. I feel like my small business brought us closer than we’ve ever been. Ever time my parents see hats or material they’d think I would like they call me and are excited to show me. They sure do help/support me. Gracias papas!

  • Most hats range from $15 – $75, depending on the design and material
