Meet Omar Imani and Anwar Husain of Smashtech in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Omar Imani and Anwar Husain.

Omar and Anwar, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We’ve had multiple businesses before in the health and wellness space, but started Smashtech together in 2015. In the beginning, it was just the two of us brothers doing everything. In just two years, the company grew to 30 employees, and we kept going from there.

Since its inception, Smashtech has had stable and impressive financial growth and we attribute it to hiring the right people, fostering an award-winning culture, and focusing on what we are passionate about and are really good at. All our brands are within the health and wellness vertical, we decided to bring everything in-house, and we honed in on our expertise which is Direct Response Marketing.

This year, we’re making our biggest move yet– we’ve signed a lease and began construction of our permanent home– a 22,000 square foot penthouse office with a 360-degree view of downtown San Diego through its floor to ceiling windows.

Perhaps one of the biggest contributors to our success is our unique culture. We have highly engaged employees and this is because they all share our vision. As one employee said in our surveys “they invest in us as much as we invest in them.” Our proudest achievement isn’t just our growth, but building something bigger than ourselves.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never smooth sailing for any entrepreneur. Even to this day, we face challenges constantly. In fact, these challenges are what keeps us going. At Smashtech, we always say “we’re only 1% done” and everyone keeps that mentality.

One year into our operations, we were seeing steady growth. But we made we made an incredibly difficult, and some might even say stupid decision that changed the shape and direction of our company.

We decided to become a vertically integrated company and take everything in-house. This meant we had to kill the brands that third parties were handling in various capacities and focus on growing the first brand we built totally in-house– SkinnyFit.

That was the most critical time for our business. Most people in our industry were sure we couldn’t succeed. And for a time, it sure seemed that way. We hired a media team that didn’t make a single sale in 9 months. But we were determined and we kept to it.

We set our goal high and hire highly talented individuals. Everyone is incredibly data and performance driven. We live and die by our data and we constantly monitor performance. We make it a point to celebrate every win and to be transparent with our challenges. We empower our team to do what is best for the company, and that’s exactly what they do.

Smashtech – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We make living a healthy lifestyle simple, but how we do it is a far better story. When we say we create brands, we mean we actually dream them up and turn them into e-commerce sensations by managing everything in-house.

We do it all from research & development, manufacturing, design, branding, marketing, media, sales, and customer service, for every brand we create. We’re not an agency, we don’t have clients, we simply create, manage, and own everything we touch.

The world is evolving fast, and we’re in the driver’s seat. We’re one of the fastest growing companies in San Diego, and because of our amazing culture, we’ve been recognized by multiple award-giving bodies and publications. We’ve been named Best Places to Work by the San Diego Business Journal 3 years in a row and named top 50 Best Workplaces by Inc. Magazine 2 years in a row in 2017-2018. And this is just the beginning.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We grew up in a small closet-turned bedroom, sharing a bed. And this is one of the reasons why we’ve always been so close. We used to go to Barnes and Noble when we were young and sit there for hours reading through business publications like Forbes, Entrepreneur, and Inc Magazine.

We’d always read about the top companies or the Inc. 500, in fact, we still do. And when we found out in 2017 that Smashtech was named one of Inc. Magazine’s top 50 best workplaces, we were close to tears. And we’re even prouder that we were recognized for 2018 as well.
