Meet Oskar Thorvaldsson of Nutritional Supplement Manuf –

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oskar Thorvaldsson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Oskar. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been interested in alternative medicine. My parents didn’t think much about the relationship between food and health. I grew up in Iceland. You may think people in Iceland eat really healthily and to an extent it’s true. Fresh fish is a common meal; however, everything American was much adored when I grew up. My dad gave me bags of Mars and Snickers and all kinds of American candy. Cheerios and Cocoa Puffs were a common breakfast. The western medical model was strictly followed back in the days and for the most part still is. Although Icelanders are waking up to the relationship between food, food supplements, and health more and more, just like in the USA.

Growing up, I lost my dad to a blood clot when I was just a kid and at that point, I was already thinking about the western medical system not being based on health but rather patents and money. Suffering a loss like that impacted me as a child and teenager. It made me want to help others. In some way, it was a calling of sorts. I swore I would never be part of the western medical system but rather a system that worked towards true health. Later my sister committed suicide as she suffered from mental illness. Having been diagnosed with schizophrenia, she committed suicide after five attempts. She suffered immensely. My mother suffered as well, trying to take care of my sister for a period of over ten years. Later on, my mother passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. And then my other dear sister passed away suddenly without any warning signs, also from a blood clot, just like my father. All this has made me want to work in the health food supplement business. I am a firm believer in supplements and healthy eating.

I started selling trace minerals from humic shale early on and then when I heard about Dr. Hulda Clark I started selling all of her products and sales were good. When Dr. Clark’s son wanted to sell the factory that made products based on her protocol, he offered me the opportunity to buy the factory. I jumped on it and became the new owner in 2006. Our company survived the financial crisis of 2007-2008, and in 2011 we split the company up into three segments in order to better streamline each operation. Instead of one company, now we had three – manufacturing, marketing, and logistics. Actually, we have two logistics companies, one here in San Diego and one in the UK in order to import our products to the EU.

Our manufacturing company is called Nutritional Supplement Manufacturers, Inc. (, our retail and marketing company is called Dr. Clark Store, Inc. (, and our logistics company is called Pick and Pack America, Inc. (

In late 2017 we also bought Bernard Jensen Products. This company has been around since 1963 and sells products based on another health crusader, Dr. Bernard Jensen.

We have always based all our productions on Dr. Clark’s struggle and desire to provide the purest products that do not have harmful additives in them. You may think that all health food supplements are good for you. According to Dr. Clark, this is not the case. She was adamantly against the use of manufacturing agents like magnesium stearate and any ingredient that was over processed. This is why our factory invested in special equipment and methods that allow us to manufacture without the common non-nutritional manufacturing agents. Our company culture focuses on providing pure supplements. We also invested in a full scale, on-site laboratory so we can test each ingredient for identity and purity using scientific methods outlined in Dietary Supplement Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) Final Rule FDA 21 CFR Part 111. This means we follow every single procedure outlined in the GMP protocols. Our factory is triple certified for industry protocols: NSF International, Natural Products Association, and Underwriters Laboratory.

We have regular audits each year to make sure our compliance record is tip-top. We are very proud of the fact that we are not only leaders when it comes to supplement purity, but we are also leaders when it comes to compliance. We like to believe we’re inspiring confidence and trust in the supplement industry.

Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The financial crisis put a wrinkle in our business, and we had to reduce staff and cut hours. This was compounded by the fact that all supplement factories had to start complying with the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). This meant we had to invest quite a bit in our laboratory. Many factories have resisted this. We decided not to resist and do the best we could. This meant we were not able to invest our profits elsewhere. We continuously re-invest our company. Then on top of the above mentioned financial strains, we were hit with a lawsuit – one of those Proposition 65 lawsuits. A gentleman from Florida decided to make lots of money by harassing businesses based on California Proposition 65. The official name of Proposition 65 is the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about the possible exposure to chemicals that may cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. It’s a screwed up system. Every single citizen of California breaks that regulation daily simply by eating regular meals. It’s a regulation that puts unprocessed food and food supplements in an unfair light. Since we had always focused our business on unprocessed supplements, this regulation hit us hard. However, we survived and made our quality control department even stronger in order to comply.

Tell us about your business/company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
We manufacture dietary supplements. Currently, we employ about 50 people. We specialize in manufacturing supplements that are rigorously tested for purity and ingredient identity. We’re able to make capsules, tablets, and liquids without additives, such as magnesium stearate, preservatives, and other chemicals people don’t know the names of. The “Healthy Living” trend has reached the supplement industry in the form of the “Clean Label” movement. People are reading their supplement labels backward, so they read about the “Other Ingredients” first. They don’t like those long words that sound like names of chemicals. We are the leading contract manufacturing factory for supplements in the USA that does not require the use of common manufacturing agents.

It makes me proud when different healthcare professionals, physicians, and naturopathic physicians come to me and tell me that the supplements from other manufacturers don’t work as good as the ones we make.

It makes me happy when people leave us testimonials. We have so many positive reviews on Amazon and on our own website.

One of my favorite products is Lugol’s Iodine Stomach Saver. One of our customers, Douglas B., wrote, “Every household should have this! This has saved much pain, grief, and lost work over the last decade.” (Testimonial available at

I couldn’t agree more with Douglas. Lugol’s Iodine is a product that truly has a positive impact on people’s health. It’s a shame that every doctor in the nation does not talk about this product to their patients. But of course, they can’t because it’s not possible to patent a natural remedy like this. If it’s not patentable, then no research can be financed and no claims can be made! So then doctors don’t know about this. The government is not speaking up for natural healthcare. Our current model of health care is like a Greek tragedy. It’s a sinking ship, and it will only end badly, in more and more suffering and loss of money and lives. Lugol’s is a good example of a product that can’t be promoted for its true benefits because of restrictive FDA rules about what kind of claims can be made about health food products. The fact that people don’t know about the benefits of Lugol’s illustrates what is truly wrong with our health care system. I am proud to sell this product.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least about our city?
Being from Iceland, I can appreciate the sun and the beach. I like so many things about San Diego. My favorite store is the People’s Food Co-op.

As with any city in the world, I don’t like how architects have completely failed humankind and built houses that are basically antisocial and promote antisocial and pompous behaviors. Houses should be built to encourage community, well-being, and safety by knowing your neighbors. I am struggling to know my neighbors, but architecture is not making it easy. My goal is to set up an intentional community that promotes ecology and healthy living in San Diego.
