Meet Patricia of Parpala Jewelry in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As soon as I realized I wanted to create a jewelry line, I started the planning process. I do not believe in overnight success stories, so I knew I had to prepare myself for it. I did not have a plan B, therefore jewelry just had to work out for me. I focused on it and I made it happen.

I was clueless, but I was so encouraged to start my own business, that I read and read everything I needed to know about the industry. I took endless notes on all the steps I needed in order to launch a jewelry business. I taught myself jewelry techniques on YouTube, I researched for the best metal vendors in the country and I learned different ways to get my jewelry made.

It took me two years to plan everything you see today. I was going through that process while working an office job at a financial advising company in downtown San Diego. I then started to host local pop-ups to start getting my name out there, until online sales finally started coming in. I shortly thereafter quit my 8-5 job in November 2016. I am nowhere near where I want to be, but seeing it grow, keeps me encouraged.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road for me at all, but having a plan definitely has helped. I believe that when you plan things and you work hard, success usually always follows. I’ve learned that the people that said would ‘help me’ ended up not helping at all, and I have learned that who I thought was not going to help me, ended up being the best help I could have wished for. I also learned how to prioritize and manage my time. I learned who I should spend time with, and what I should spend time on.

It’s hard to keep yourself motivated when you don’t see results right away. Luckily, I knew how to brainwash myself (haha!) to keep pushing forward. It’s very easy to lose yourself in the process too, not because you’re weak, but because you’re human, and it is completely normal to get discouraged from time to time. I learned it’s all about learning how to rest and regroup because quitting is never an option.

I encounter obstacles pretty much every day. That’s just part of owning your own business. Right when you think you have it all ‘figured out’ something happens.

Unfortunately, issues always happen and I have no control over them, so I just learned to handle them better so they wouldn’t personally affect me as much.

The brand offers delicate and minimal jewelry that can be worn as a single accent or as buildable statements day-to-night. Each piece is handcrafted in our San Diego studio with the finest raw materials using 14k gold filled and 925 sterling silver, making each and every piece waterproof and tomboy resistant.

Clients can be styled by appointment in our showroom located in downtown San Diego. We also sell our full collection online.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There are a couple things that make me proud to this day; the fact that I started out of nothing and created a business which I can now live off of. Seeing how clients choose to spend their money on my designs is an amazing feeling because there are so many talented designers out there, that it is very flattering when they pick my collection.

Also, when celebrities and influencers wear my pieces. They have access to every single brand and designer in the world, yet they decide to wear Parpala.
