Meet Patricia Luti Telles of Enjoy It Faces in North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Luti Telles.

Patricia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil. After getting my Bachelor Degree, I came to San Diego to learn English and met my Dutch husband, who was also a foreigner student. After traveling between Brazil and The Netherlands for a while, I moved to the The Netherlands and fast forward, learned Dutch, got a job, got married, got a house and 3 kids! In 2007 we applied for the Green Card Lottery and we won! After weighting pros and cons of moving across the ocean we decided to give it a try, with the thought of if we don’t go we will never know what it would be. We moved to San Diego in June 2008.

Nowadays, I am 44 years old, my kids are 9, 11 and 13, I work as an Office Manager for a Forensic Engineer and I paint on live, moving canvases that smile back when I finish my art!

Has it been a smooth road?
I got my business license and insurance but didn’t know how to get clients. A good friend asked me to paint for her daughter’s birthday, I volunteered at my kids school events, got a simple website, signed up on party websites and the clients started to call me.

I’m not the most extrovert woman around. I’m not shy either, but imagine going to parties, where you don’t know anybody, and everybody will be kind of looking at what you do, how you do it, and having high expectations of your work.

Since most gigs are in the weekend, it’s hard to balance my family/personal life with my face painting business.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Enjoy It Faces story. Tell us more about the business.
In 2010 I was watching my own kids getting painted for the first time, it was completely new to me and I fell in love with this kind of art. I thought with myself “I want to do that!” I started looking for classes/workshops to get more information on how to start my own face painting business and learn more about the industry. In that same year I took my first class and it opened a new Face and Body World for me. After that, I couldn’t stop painting! I really enjoy taking classes, learning new techniques and meeting other fellow artists. I subscribe to online classes and enroll to workshops whenever it’s available here in San Diego or Los Angeles.

Enjoy It Faces opened in 2011, and I am proud to say that I use only professional, top quality, water-based cosmetic grade paints, designed for use on the skin, as well as cosmetic-grade glitter and adhesive (glue), safe even around the eyes. I’m always practicing my skills, attending classes and learning new techniques so that when hired I will provide fast, beautiful, high quality designs. I always warn the clients about cheap “face painting”. No matter which face painter you hire, for the safety of your guests, always make sure that they use products that are made for use on skin. Professional cosmetic grade face paints have been thoroughly tested. They are designed to be easy to work with, long lasting, comfortable to wear, vibrant and most importantly, they are safe! “Non-Toxic” does not mean “safe for skin”. Acrylic paints (AKA craft paints or tempura paints) are not meant to be used on the skin – nor are watercolor markers or pencils. Many people are allergic to the non-FDA approved chemicals and colorants used in craft paints and will break out in a rash when these paints are used. Watercolor/washable markers do not easily wash off skin – the term “washable” refers to their ability to wash off fabric easily, not skin. Beware of non-cosmetic craft glitter as well, which can cut and seriously damage the eyes.

I do mostly FACE PAINTING, SUGAR SKULLS, HALLOWEEN MAKEUP and PREGNANT BELLIES.

I’m a very neat and clean face painter. I take pride of my painting kit and set up, they are my tools and business card. I’ve seen great artists with a messy and “dirt” kit and it really throws me off.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The face and body art industry is always growing, there are so many talented artists, new products, new brands and trends. It’s not only for kids birthday parties, it’s for any age.
