Meet Paul Fishman of #FISHMANFIT in La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Fishman.

#FISHMANFIT started as a hashtag 3 years ago and has since grown into a full blown health and wellness brand, however the story of #FISHMANFIT started long before the company was born.

Paul, founder of #FISHMANFIT was overweight his entire life. He spent most of his childhood enduring constant mockery from his peers, constant pressure from his loved ones to lose weight and constant self-loathing. After years of yo-yo dieting, attending weight loss summer camp and avoiding the true reasons for his weight problem, he finally faced his issues head on.

In the summer of 2011, while living in New York City, 3 years prior to #FISHMANFIT’s inception, he looked at himself in the mirror and said enough was enough. Much like any other transformation story there was a catalyst to the change and his was major. For years he had been living a closeted life and he was finally ready to step into the light and honor his truest self. In one foul swoop he came out of the closet, recognized his feelings and almost overnight lost 20 pounds. The emotional weight of keeping secrets was manifesting itself as physical weight in his body. Once he started shedding secrets, his weight started shedding too.

From that moment, he found a community at a local spin studio and became a student- sometimes attending class 6-7 times a week. After recruiting over 200 people through social media to join him on his journey at this studio he decided it was time to bring his story to the instructor podium and he got certified to teach spin.

Fast forward to today and he has been leading classes at Sparkcycle in La Jolla for 3 years, branched out into Personal Training, Pilates, Nutrition Coaching, a YouTube Channel and most importantly empowering his clients to honor their truest selves.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building a career in the fitness industry in never easy. At times I teach upwards of 20 classes a week between spin and Pilates, plus I have private clients and my own training schedule. Managing my career as a business owner and entrepreneur often times keeps me working around the clock.

Taking my fitness career full time was probably one of the bigger struggles. When I moved from New York to San Diego I was fully invested in my family’s business and was teaching on the side. As my reputation started to build another spin studio approached me to teach and I had to make the hard decision to leave the family business to pursue fitness full time. Going from teaching 3 classes a week to 11 was a huge push for my body and mind. It was not easy, but I’m so happy that the universe gave me that push!

Please tell us about #FISHMANFIT.
#FISHMANFIT is a health and wellness brand focused on fitness- both physical and mental. The brand is built around me, a California native, and I use my personal story to inspire all people to honor their truest self.

On any given day you can find me teaching spin, Pilates, training private clients, leading empowerment sessions and sharing my story. I have found passion in social media andI love to inspire self-love through my Instagram and YouTube channel.

I am known for my exhilarating spin classes at Sparkcycle and have been voted Most Moving Instructor in San Diego by Classpass for the past 2 years and landed the title of Best Personal Trainer in La Jolla for the past 3 years. These titles are things that I am extremely proud of and I cherish the opportunity to lead my community towards self-love and appreciation!

My coaching style definitely sets me apart from the other coaches in the space. I have the innate ability to create space for any and all people from vastly different walks of life. I pride myself in creating an environment of zero shame, expectation or judgment.

Empowering people to be comfortable where they are and appreciating the process is my mission and favorite part of my “job”.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Growing up my Dad worked nights to provide for our family. He taught me about working hard and being unapologetic about your goals. My favorite memories are of welcoming him home, when he was dead tired and just turning on the radio and dancing in the living room. We spent hours just dancing together as a family. So much fun!
