Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Judah.
Ashley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been a licensed cosmetologist since 2006, but I’ve been doing hair my whole life. My mom is a hairstylist also and when I was little, I wanted to be just like her and would cut all her doll heads she’d bring home to practice on. When I was in highschool my brave friends would have me cut their hair (they must’ve thought you’re just born with the hairstylist gene, lol). I remember being so proud, but looking back, I’d like to formally apologize to each of you who I let walk around with those lopsided cuts on your heads. When I graduated from beauty school, I was lucky enough to walk into a salon right away and work alongside my mom. Eight years later, I decided I needed a change so I started a job at Bella D’ora spa. I am forever thankful for the growth and the knowledge I obtained there, without it, I’m not sure I would’ve easily have transitioned into owning my own business.
Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t believe anything worth having comes easy, and I don’t think any business owner would tell you there haven’t been struggles. There was a time in my career where I started questioning whether or not hair was even the right path for me. I wasn’t happy and I could feel my passion slipping away. I wasn’t ready to give up yet but I knew I needed a big change. Doing hair for 13 years, I’ve met the most incredible people and I have the most amazing clients, seeing people every six weeks gives you a genuine connection that easily makes your client relationship transition into a friendship. My clients are the reason I pushed through a tough time. Opening my own salon and being able to live out my dream reminded me of why I once LOVED this career and I’m forever grateful for that!
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a blonde specialist, I’d say about 85% of my clientele are blonde. I’m lucky because once someone finds a stylist that figures out their perfect blonde, they’ll stick with you through thick and thin! When you’re in a salon everyday you can easily slip into the “this is just my job” mode, but one thing I always try to remember is how big of a deal it is for the client walking in. People are genuinely excited when they come in to get their hair done and I like to make sure the experience is amazing as it can be for them!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
There is literally nothing I can complain about living in San Diego! I know we all like to talk about how expensive it can be but I always say, I’d rather live in a shack in SD than a mansion almost any other place. Being a hairstylist in San Diego is amazing for many reasons: 1. SO many blondes and so many different variations of it to play with! 2. The people here are so friendly and everyone is always willing to give a helping hand! 3. People here are very adventurous and like letting you have fun with their hair! If you’re looking to start up a business in San Diego I say go for it, there’s no better place in the world!
