Introducing the Personal Training Certification Program at San Diego Mesa College

Today we’d like to introduce you to the Personal Training Certification Program at San Diego Mesa College.

So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We started in the 1990’s as a personal training certification program. Since, we have served hundreds of students and helped them develop the knowledge, skills, and hands-on techniques to become successful fitness professionals.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of our biggest obstacles was not having a dedicated, up-to-date fitness facility to train our students in. As of 2016, we have a two-story state-of-the-art gym that includes multiple weight rooms, a cardio training area, an indoor cycling, and a yoga/pilates room. These advancements have allowed our students to gain hands-on experience with the industry’s latest exercise equipment and to gain necessary experience training students on campus.

Please tell us more about your program, what you are currently focused on and most proud of. What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a one-year vocational program that certifies students of all ages as personal trainers and prepares them to sit for the American Council on Exercise (ACE) Personal Training Certification Exam. We are known for our hands-on classes, dynamic lectures, inclusive environment, and excellent connections in the community. Our students leave the program equipped and ready to take on jobs in the health and fitness field with the connections to find employment.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We love seeing our students succeed when they leave our program. We have had students leave and immediately become the top-grossing personal trainer at their gym, students who dramatically grow their in-home personal training business, and a few who have opened their own fitness facility. We look back fondly on our time spent with all of our students and love when they return to share their future successes with us.

  • The program is 19 units in total and it is currently $46/unit, making the program $874 for the entire year.
