Meet Raquel Cusi of The Stronghold in Point Loma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raquel Cusi.

Raquel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m Raquel Cusi! I am from San Diego, born and raised and am a mom of 4. For the past 10 years, I have owned The Stronghold in Point Loma, a Martial Arts studio dedicated to teaching individuals and families the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I first started Jiu Jitsu in 2005, when 2 sexual assaults occurred at my college campus (Cal State San Marcos) and SDSU (San Diego State University) in the same week.

By the recommendation of a friend, I started training at the Roy Harris Academy in Miramar. Since that day, I have had the honor of owning a Jiu-Jitsu school and being able to train alongside my family. What brings me even more joy is being able to see other families learn and grow together.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road! Some of the struggles were dealing with raising a family, opening a brand new business and financial speed bumps, but it definitely has shown us that community is a huge component of success with any small business.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Stronghold – what should we know?
The Stronghold is a family-owned Jiu Jitsu school in Point Loma. We specialize in Jiu-Jitsu for the whole family and take pride in having a lot of amazing students who have made a lifelong commitment to the martial art.

What sets us apart from others is our family-friendly environment. Having 4 kids that also train alongside their parents and encouraging others to do the same is very humbling and rewarding.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Community. Any business is successful mainly in the community that supports them!
