Meet Ray Vizcaino and Manuel Miranda of MR Cakes in Hillcrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ray Vizcaino and Manuel Miranda.

MR Cakes was created by two individuals who met through culinary school and brought their love and passion for sweet goods to the world. It started with making a birthday cake for a family member and from that moment, well the orders came in. A lot of hard work and dedication has helped their business grow.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like any other small business, starting off, we have had our ups and downs. If life was smooth as frosting well it wouldn’t be as entertaining. Some of the struggles we have come along the way is starting from the ground up on our own. Getting our product out for customers to know what our product is, and how it separates us from all other bakeries.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
MR Cakes is a local bakery within the Hillcrest area, and we provide services all throughout San Diego. We specialize in wedding cakes, celebration cakes, custom sugar cookies and a variety of pastries. We are most proud that our very own co-owner/cake designer Ray was featured this year on Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship and made it to the final four. Being able to show the entire country what delicious and ghoulish deserts/cakes he could create has tremendously been our biggest accomplishment.

What were you like growing up?
Well, growing up in the Vizcaino household was a bit interesting to say the least. Being the second oldest from six kids and helping mom raise all of them definitely made me grow up much faster than I should have. That being said I don’t see it as a downfall because it helped me later on down the road. It also helped me through my years when I served in the United States Marine Corps. Personality wise? Well that’s like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get with me.

Manuel came from half the size of a family that I came from. If anything, family is the most important bond to have. He always has the most upbeat personality that you have ever met. Always optimistic and a laugh that can take you out of a dull moment.

Being married to your business partner and working together can be very interesting over all. It’s like a tv show to tell the truth. One of us is always about having fun, while the other is about business. We definitely are opposites, and it’s true that do attract it’s never a dull moment with both of us in and out of the kitchen. Besides baking baked goods family and our dogs are our biggest interest. When we can we visit one another families out of city or state. It helps remind us of where we have come, and where we want to move forward as a company as well.
