Meet Rebecca Ching, LMFT of Potentia Family Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Ching, LMFT.

Rebecca, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Early in my career as a therapist, I had a vision of having like-minded professionals under the same room offering multi-disciplinary support to the clients we serve. I would see clients drive all over town to get the support they needed and add even more stress to their already full lives. I also saw how hard it was for professionals on a client’s support team to collaborate on a regular basis.

So I wanted to create a beautiful space that is both highly professional and deeply personal where we could take the core values of collaborative, specialized, respectful, client-focused care to the next level. Potentia Family Therapy, Inc was born of that vision 10 years ago this month and is also the fruit of all of my previous professional experience working in Washington, DC politics, advertising in New York City, and international youth work in Zurich, Switzerland.

Seeing the power of change on a grassroots level when individuals, couples, families, organizations are doing well emotionally and in their key relationships scales positive impact in so many areas in our community. I also knew this vision would involve a deep commitment to changing the negative stigma mental health and relational challenges have in our culture – and Potentia is deeply committed to changing this stigma so less people are suffering in silence and feel like they are alone in their challenges.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh, gosh – no, it wasn’t easy! Having a great idea is one thing and running a healthy business is another. I had a steep learning curve around business systems, hiring the right-fit people, the differences between being a leader and a manager, and how to navigate my professional passions with my family loves. When I expanded Potentia 7 years ago, my oldest daughter was diagnosed on the autism spectrum which was a beautiful and hard whirlwind.

I have so many key learnings from that season and am so grateful for the choices I made to surround myself with sharp and wholehearted clinical, business, and spiritual support systems. These people were and are my lifeline and I continue to believe we cannot run and grow a thriving business alone and without being open to feedback, iteration, failure, and not having all the answers.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Potentia Family Therapy, Inc. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Potentia is an integrated mental health practice that treats the whole person and the whole spectrum of mental health and relational struggles. We offer specialized care in the treatment of anxiety/trauma/EMDR; addictions and compulsive behaviors, shame and perfection struggles, disordered eating spectrum.

We are known for our practice of EMDR therapy, Internal Family Systems, treating the whole spectrum of health and wellness struggles, and our ability to offer multidisciplinary services under the same roof. I was an early adopter of Brené Brown’s methodologies and am a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator and Consultant. Offering workshops based on this research has been a personal and professional joy to see people do the work to dare to live, love, and lead with more courage, compassion, and connection.

At the heart of change is doing the work to heal shame, trauma and difficult life experiences and it is our mission to create a safe space to do this necessary work. We also have specialized training in working with the faith community for those who wish to integrate their spiritual life into their healing journey or heal from wounds in their spiritual community. I am so proud of the team we have today. They are incredible humans as well as clinicians. They are whip-smart, have high standards of excellence, and offer excellent care to anyone who walks through our doors.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am excited to continue to add to the Potentia team, offer more workshops based on Brené’s research and Internal Family Systems therapy and support not just individuals and families but also business leaders, entrepreneurs, and founders run the marathon of following their dreams without sacrificing their health, core values, and personal life.

We are also in conversations with community leaders on how we can be an intentional and steady support to those on the front lines working with vulnerable populations.

Helping the helpers makes sense to our systemic lens as we seek to support a change in the community as a whole. Stay tuned for more community-focused workshops (Learning Labs) and creative gatherings, too.
