Meet Joanna Yanez of Rebirth in Mission Valley and Sorrento Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Yanez.

Joanna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in the San Diego area. I have cultivated an interest in the healing arts since my youth, beginning with my Great Aunt, an energy worker. My interest in natural medicine and healing practices have taken me up and down the west coast and deep into Central America where I had the privilege of studying native medicine, and abdominal therapy with Indigenous healers, Herbalist, Sobadores (traditional body workers), and Midwives. I love combining my knowledge of ancient techniques with modern medicine, anatomy and physiology to provide each client with custom care.

I always knew what I wanted to do. Right out of high school I continued my studies in Massage therapy and herbalism. I have been practicing healing arts completing my certification and licensing as a massage therapist and herbalist at 20 years of age.

I went on to train as a Doula and am also certified in the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy™. I have received advanced training and certification in pre-conception support, pregnancy and post-partum massage, as well as certification in Chi Nei Tsang, cupping therapy, reflexology, and guided mediation. The name of my business Rebirth, symbolizes the reemerging of ancient healing practices of my Mexican indigenous roots here in modern America.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is a struggle to educate people on what abdominal therapy, herbal vaginal steam baths are and why they are so beneficial especially for women who have a tilted uterus or uterine diseases. What helps many people become educated on this was receiving referrals from other therapist: acupuncturist, chiropractors, other body workers that know the origins and benefits of my work. They will often educate and refer their clients to me. I also have to credit celebrities that tried the Vsteam and womb massage for making it main stream.

Also, it was truly a struggle paying out of pocket for certifications that don’t have any financial aid. Seeing how inaccessible these programs were to people of color whose cultures these practices originated was always heart breaking to me. I know there is a high demand for healing in communities of color. I feel like the lack of accessibility to practitioners of color effects accessibility to these communities.

I believe healing practitioners should come in a variety of backgrounds and cultures. I encourage people from different ethnic backgrounds to keep the traditional healing practices of their ancestors alive, I know it is a struggle while living in modern day America.

What has helped me deal with this is giving back when I can along with hosted a couple sliding scale healing workshops with donation based bodywork. Please stay tuned for future events.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Rebirth – what should we know?

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I treat each client as if they were a sister. I listen and take time educating each client so that they may have the knowledge on how to care for themselves with natural remedies. I truly love what I do!
