Meet Ren Lindroos of Richer for Wandering in Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ren Lindroos.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ren. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Richer for Wandering was created ages ago by my parents, two expats living in Vienna, Austria, who loved each other and loved to travel. Although that was many years before I was born, this new iteration is still inspired by my parents.

A few years ago, I designed some cute traveling pig illustrations for them and their travel blog and they encouraged me to push myself and attempt doing more. I studied illustration and I’ve always loved animals, so combining that with my love of adventure made sense. There was A LOT of guess-work in the beginning, but thankfully my parents have been incredibly supportive teammates. Richer for Wandering wouldn’t be anywhere without them or those first customers. It took off from there and suddenly we were growing out the number of designs as well as festivals. I have gone about things a little backward, since Richer for Wandering didn’t have a working website or a social media presence for the first year – but I’m learning and figuring it out and now I’m looking into getting more of my art prints out there as well, which is pretty exciting!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I feel like there are always struggles when starting something new. Thankfully, I’ve always liked walking off the beaten path and I’ve learned from experience that those roads are never smooth! As someone who spends most of my time drawing, painting, and designing, the business side of things was a bit of a surprise. I’d rather watch paint dry than learn about permits and taxes, but it’s essential. I also struggled at festivals and was a bit embarrassed at first because, as an introvert, it’s always been hard for me to put myself and my work out there. I’m grateful to all the lovely people that have connected with me and Richer for Wandering, who has helped me overcome that struggle.

Richer for Wandering – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Richer for Wandering is all about adventure, including finding adventure even in your own neighborhood. My illustrations are inspired by animals, myths, and a love of exploration. It’s known for whimsical and at times, ‘punny’ t-shirts and tote bags, but I’m branching out into more prints and greeting cards too.

We love swapping stories and sharing experiences with all the interesting people we meet at different markets and festivals. It’s magical to see people connect with my illustrations, from Sloth and Sea Otter lovers to Platypus fans – it’s been so cool to see people get excited and talk about how they can relate to Richer for Wandering because of their own adventures. I also like supporting locals and have worked with an awesome company, Gallery AKA, who has done our silkscreening since the beginning.

Richer for Wandering also gives a portion of the sales to various causes. For instance, the Mark Twain shirt donates to TAKE FLYTE, an organization that helps underprivileged high school kids, which funds adventures and travel to places outside of their neighborhoods. The “Bear Riding a Bike with a Surf Board” design goes to aiding in beach cleanup philanthropic causes. Richer for Wandering encourages people to take adventures, explore new places, and experience new cultures. It’s all about inspiring light-hearted curiosity and belief that traveling, even to a new place in your neighborhood, can be an adventure!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success has many changing faces. At first, success for me was just putting my work out there. Now success to me is going out and seeing people actually wearing our shirts or using the totes – and having people come back and tell us it’s their favorite shirt and that they wear it every week! Success is also growing financially because it lets us continue giving back to charities while finding ways to support and partner with other creatives in the community! Of course, turning Richer for Wandering into something other than just an idea has been my highest success because it’s allowed me to connect with others while continuing to develop my creativity.
