Meet Rene’ Manatt of Bay Park Fitness in Bay Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rene’ Manatt.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working as a personal training in college because I LOVED exercise in general but especially loved how it helped me manage the stress of school and work. This inspired me to want to help coach others manage stress, lose weight, be healthy, and get strong with exercise! I was a Genetic Engineer major at UCSD and really enjoyed my science courses and working in genetics labs on campus.

But I also fell in love with learning about the anatomy and physiology of the body and how we responded physically, mentally, and emotionally to exercise and nutrition. I graduated UCSD and was pursuing my Masters in Public Health and still working in science laboratories with hopes of working in the genetic counseling field, but I just couldn’t let go of my “fun” job as a personal trainer.

In the middle of my program, I decided to dedicate my education and thesis to a career as a Personal Trainer where I could make a direct impact on someone’s life by educating and inspiring them to live a healthier lifestyle. After graduation, I continued to manage and worked at a large chain Gym and was part of an incredible team of people for 13 years.

Once my husband and I started our family I wanted to create my own business to maximize my time and energy for both my career and my family, and that’s when Bay Park Fitness was created. I am a one-person shop, and my goal was to have a private workout environment that helped REMOVE some of the traditional barriers people have with going to a large gym. It has evolved over the years, and I LOVE getting be part of my clients’ day.

The goal of EVERY session is that the clients SWEAT a little, learn something, HAVE fun, LAUGH a lot, and leave feeling BETTER mentally, physically, and emotionally than when they first came in. I have TWO mottos: “MAKE FITNESS FUN!” and “FIND A WAY. NOT AN EXCUSE.” I want my clients to feel like they always have a way to make their life better with health and fitness.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always challenges and struggles, but in the big picture, I really feel VERY lucky to get to balance my family life and my career. Having your own business is always a little scary, but the rewards of making my own schedule to fit my families needs while maximizing my time to help clients has been amazing.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bay Park Fitness – what should we know?
I think my ability to adapt to EACH client’s needs is my specialty. I have worked with a variety of clientele and love the diversity and challenge of all levels of fitness and goals of each person.

My favorite clients are those that maybe lack a little motivation, but once I get them started, they find a new level of energy they didn’t know they had on their own. I often tell my clients the only job they have is to SHOW UP, I’ll help take care of the rest. JUST SHOW UP. LET GO OF THE EXCUSES. HAVE FUN.

I think what sets me apart from others is my constant thirst for knowledge in my field. I love adding to my education with additional certifications that will help my clients achieve their goals, and stay up to date on nutrition and exercise research so I can bring that information to my clients.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I love GOAL SETTING!!! This is a BIG personal practice of mine, and I think goal setting short and long term is very important, and it’s one of the first things I lay out for my clients!

I believe DIGGING IN and finding clients “WHY” is critical, and setting process goals find ways to BE BETTER, not perfect, but just a little better every day. I also have a genuine passion and gratitude for getting to do what I do as a career.

I can honestly say after 20 years of being a Personal Trainer I look forward to EVERY SESSION with my clients.
