Meet Richard Marks of RDM Management Group in North County

“Expect Great Things to Happen”


Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Marks.

Richard, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My passion for training and encouraging others to be their best started in the summer of 2006 while working for a leading Wireless company as an Indirect Account Manager “IAM”. As an IAM, I had the responsibility of managing accounts with our resellers also known as “The Dealer Channel”. At times, based on the volatility and competiveness of the market place, we would have to make changes to our dealer contracts. This one particular change would impact how our dealers would be compensated.

As my team members and I begin to discuss the potential impact these changes would have on our dealers’ ability to be profitable or remain in business; disappear and fear began to sat-in. One of my team members begin to described how their dealer was going to react. Suddenly, concerns of dealers positively accepting these changes became the new topic of conversation. Yelling and screaming was the thought reaction most IAM’s feared they would face. Murmuring of being the barring of bad news was quickly rejected; until an IAM suggested faxing the contractual changes to the dealers.

It was thought most dealers don’t read the contracts anyway, and we could just ask them to sign it and fax it back to us: If some of the dealers had questions, they could call us to discuss the details. This way, we could avoid having these dreadful conversations, with all of our dealers.

At that very moment I began to image how I would feel if someone I deemed as a trusted business partner, would fax me this important information without a personal phone call, scheduling an appointment, and reviewing the details with me. Helping me understand, why the changes took place and strategizing with me, on how to make the required adjustments.

Ever since that experience, I developed an interest and a keen sense of awareness around human behavior, especially when faced with uncomfortable, and challenging situations.

I contemplated on discussing these issues with my boss. So later that morning I walked into his office to share my observation and concerns of the earlier conversations. I asked him if I could develop a brief training to assist my fellow IAM’s. Something they could use as a guide or tips as a way to deal with this uncertain response of our dealers. He agreed; I delivered the training; the team received the information resulting into a continuing respectful relationship with our dealer partners

Fast-forward to the present; today I used the same subset to awareness. The goal is to provide our most important assets “our employees” with the necessary tools and training to take care of our 2nd most important assets “our customers”.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
At times the road has been smooth, especially when I received the internal gratifications of helping others achieved their desired outcome. As we know, RDM Management Group is a business and a business must be profitable if it is to remain in business. As I measure my personal output, combined with my passion and purpose; there were times I struggled mentally; because the business was not yielding the financial needs to sustain itself.

What were you like growing up?
I am from a small town in Missouri called Poplar Bluff. Growing up in Poplar Bluff, I remember as a kid, all I wanted to do get the heck out of that place and experience life as a businessman. In my adolescent life, I recalled watching “The Six Million Dollar Man. There was one particular episode were The Six Million Dollar Man was chosen for this special assignment. The character had to catch a plane and travel to an undisclosed location to solve a problem and use his bionic powers to save the day. I remember the citizens he saved were grateful, they were better because of his bionic powers and his willingness to look at adversity directly in the face and conquer it.

I wanted to have a similar impact on others’ lives, not running from life challenges, but running towards them.
My personality is positive, fun, empowering, and encouraging. I love helping people fight through the negative thoughts we encounter during the course of our day and life.
