Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Santa Maria.
Richard, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was a Kung Fu San Soo instructor for 30 years and a gym rat before I retired from the teamsters. I started to look at different personal training programs for a career and a good friend told me about this program called CrossFit.
Looked it up on the internet a was amazed at the WOD’s ( workout of the day) that these guys were doing. I read as much of the information that Coach Glassman published and knew I wanted to be apart of it. So, began my journey into CrossFit. After a few months of trying to do the daily WOD’s, I signed up for a 3-day level 1 cert and completed that in September 2005. In November of that year, CrossFit Chula Vista was established.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nobody really knew what this training was aboutand people would refer to it as cross training. Since 2005, CrossFit has grown in popularity and now everybody knows about it.
Never having a business backround you make alot of mistakes and I think, I made them all. Kicked out of a gym, made a few moves. Watched coaches start their own gym you get the drift.
Please tell us about CrossFit Chula Vista.
From Foundations of CrossFit, here is an explanation of what we do: CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program. We have designed our program to elicit as broad an adaptational response as possible. CrossFit is not a specialized fitness program but a deliberate attempt to optimize physical competence in each of ten recognized fitness domains. They are cardiovascular and respiratory, endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. The CrossFit Program was developed to enhance an individual’s competency at all physical tasks. Our athletes are trained to perform successfully at multiple, diverse and randomized physical challenges. This fitness is demanded of military and police personnel, firefighters and many sports requiring total or complete physical prowess. CrossFit has proven effective in these arenas.
We train for the unknown and unknowable so our athletes can be ready for anything.
We are most proud of the fact that we help people improve their overall health and physical fitness no matter where they begin. Some of our athletes have injuries to overcome and unhealthy nutritional habits. We teach our clients skills to manage both physical injuries and improve their nutrition to live their lives to the fullest.
Our clients set us apart. This is probably the only fitness arena where the last person to finish gets all of the cheers. Our clients rally around each other to help push through tough workouts. Since everybody is doing the same workout (some with minor modifications), everyone is pushed out of their comfort zones as a group. The effort given is appreciated by everyone and there is a lot of friendly competition as results are posted for each workout. The bonds formed in this gym, make for a strong COMMUNITY.
