Meet Rick Hohn of Spirit Wheels Ministry in Escondido

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Hohn.

More Than a Watchmaker is the autobiography of Rick, an amazingly accomplished man who was diagnosed at age two with cerebral palsy, which affects all four of his limbs and restricts his speech.

The doctor who was diagnosing him told his parents that despite his severe disabilities he would be able to do anything but make a watch. Her conclusion was shocking to them but still encouraging. The doctor knew he had intelligence but obviously lacked the fine-motor abilities to do intricate work. How true this diagnosis has been!

Threading this theme throughout his autobiography, Rick Hohn glorifies God for having given him so many other abilities besides making watches. Broken at a young age from a deep depression, Rick struggled and persevered to become who he is today, a man of contagious joy. Now, having established his own ministry, he is an associate pastor for his church and guest speaks in other churches, schools, and organizations around the country.

As an evangelist, a motivational speaker, a retired consultant for Tobii DynaVox, (the manufacturer of speech-generated devices), an artist and an author, Rick gives his autobiography, an honest story, written from the heart, which is entertaining and encouraging to all. Rick’s life is a testimony to his faith in God. He has accomplished so much more than just being able to handle the details on a tiny watch.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
On January 17, 1947, I was born with cerebral palsy that seriously affected my arms and legs as well as speech. However, I have not let the disability stop me. As you can imagine the challenges have been many, but with each one that I have faced God has made a way.

Many would see my speech disability and say that I could not speak, but I am currently the associate pastor of Winds of Harvest in San Marco and speak ( through my speaking device on a regular basis. Others have said I could not be independent, but I own my own home and have a live-in caregiver.

The difficulty with spasticity would seem to make it impossible to be an artist, but I have successfully been a painter for more than fifty years. Now I like to encourage others who live with disabilities to do what they believe they can do. I have also studied Human development (psychology) at Santa Monica College which has helped me greatly.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Spirit Wheels Ministry – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Spirit Wheels Ministry is working to assist those with disabilities and informs the local community about how they can help. My missions statement is “To bring help to the helpless, hope to the hopeless, comfort to the hurting, and to help people with disabilities walk in the fullness of God’s power and love”.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I want to give wheelchairs and medical equipment to people in Baja, Mexico. Many disabled people there are stuck in bed because they don’t have wheelchairs. Please visit my ministry’s website for more detailed information.
