Meet Riley Waite

Today we’d like to introduce you to Riley Waite.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a Fine Artist originating from Ireland, currently based in southern California, who focuses mainly on contemporary portraiture. I have received my Illustration certificate from Orange Coast College and I am currently working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art at cal state university, Long Beach. I am currently taking on a variety of commissions with realistic portraiture as the subject matter. I am inspired by contemporary artists such as Sean Cheetham and Jenny Seville and I actively participate in portrait painting workshops.

Please tell us about your art.
I focus on portraits because the human face is a particular interest to me. I find that we, as humans, look at the human face and it awakens something primal in us. A human face captures our attention and holds our gaze more than any other subject. It is for this reason and my love of detail and realism that continues to motivate me to create portraits.

Currently, I am working on a series of drawings of portraits with nontraditional materials such as soot and wax from candles. My goal is to stretch and challenge myself to create realistic portraits with more unorthodox materials, in hopes to creating more intrigue for the viewer.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Being an Artist can, of course, be a lonely pursuit…but one that I think is one of the most gratifying at times. Going to college has helped me tremendously to grow a network and creating friendships. Also going to as art shows related to your work as often as you can help. It can be difficult to talking to strangers at an art show but I feel like is comes with the territory as an artist.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I’m quite active on Instagram at Rileywaiteart and try to post as much quality content as I can for my followers. And of course, you can visit my website at www.rileywaiteart.com and my Facebook RileyWaiteArt. All my work is for sale and I’m currently taking painting commissions so whatever sales I get just helps me continue to create art.
