Meet Robin Plotnik of WhatRobinEats in North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Plotnik.

Robin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Being in the fashion industry for the last 15 years, the big question was “what do models eat?” What started as a hashtag seven years ago became a passion for me. I knew I loved nutrition but never looked at cooking with an artistic eye. I began plating my food with care and putting my “strange but good” toast combos out there for everyone to see. After two years, @WhatRobinEats has become more than an Instagram full of food, there is a community that has grown through healthy breakfasts, comfort food hacks, and fitness events. I am also a new mom to a sweet little girl named Poppy! I love creating quick recipes for other mamas to make with limited time. @WhatRobinEats followers engage with #ToastLikeRobin every Tuesday and love a good peanut butter drizzle. @WhatRobinEats is a place for people to be inspired to live a healthy lifestyle through fitness and eating food that’s sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think if your job is on social media, there is bound to be bumps in the road. People have their own opinions and they are not afraid to express them over the internet. The biggest lesson I’ve learned while building WhatRobinEats is that not everyone will like you and that’s OK. Being myself and sticking to what I’m passionate about makes WhatRobinEats fun for me and I look forward to creating content every day!

We’d love to hear more about your work.
TOAST! Ok, maybe not strictly toast, but I do believe toast played a big role in drawing traffic to my page. When I first started WhatRobinEats, I noticed my #ToastTuesday photos received more engagement than any other photo. I love “strange but good” combos and there’s no combo that does not taste great on toast! Every Tuesday, my toast photos received more traffic than any other photo and I had this idea to create the hashtag #ToastLikeRobin to get everyone in on the fun. I encourage my audience to tag their toast photos with #ToastLikeRobin for all to see and for a chance to be featured on my stories. I share ten of my favorite creations each week and it’s so fun to see everyone’s toast! I’ve also taught iPhone food photography toast workshops at Whole Foods Market locations all throughout Southern California! As Dwight Schrute would say: “Bread is the paper of the food industry. You write your sandwich on it.” What sets me apart is that my audience can come to my page and expect to see user-friendly recipes that are sure to please any crowd. My goal is to make cooking healthier options fun and doable for anyone. You don’t need to be a five-star chef to make my meals and they require minimal ingredients. I also share a lot of nut butter syrup drizzles on top of pancakes, french toast, and waffles. Never enough nut butter in my opinion!

What were you like growing up?
I was extremely shy growing up. I remember hiding behind my mom anytime someone would talk to me until fifth grade. Then, in fifth grade, I randomly wanted to start participating in Pageants and singing onstage. I competed in pageants from age 13-19 and went on to win the titles of Miss Greater San Diego Teen USA 2008, Miss San Diego America 2009, and Miss CA US International 2010. I didn’t have a healthy childhood as far as nutrition goes (my main food groups were chicken nuggets, frozen taquitos, and cinnamon toast crunch cereal), so I started working with nutritionist and trainers when I began competing in pageants and modeling. I was preparing my own food by the time I was 14 so that really sparked my interest in cooking at a young age. I have always enjoyed traveling and moved to NYC when I was 21 to pursue my modeling career. I lived in NYC for a few years before moving to LA to be closer to my now husband. We recently moved back to San Diego last year after having our sweet baby girl, Poppy!
