Meet Robyn Benincasa of The Project Athena Foundation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn Benincasa.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The Project Athena Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit that helps Survivors of medical or traumatic setbacks live an adventurous dream as part of their recovery. Every year, we hold 5 endurance adventures for Survivors (and the Fundraising Gods and Goddesses who support their training and adventure) who want to make their big COMEBACK and become the very best of what they are today. At Project Athena, we say that “You’re never defined by your setback, you’re defined by your COMEBACK”.

Our annual adventures for survivors and fundraisers include: Harbor to Harbor— a 50 mile, 2 day walk from Oceanside Harbor to San Diego Harbor Grand Canyon Rim to Rim Trek— a one day trek all the way across the Grand Canyon (24 miles) Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim Trek— the DOUBLE!

All the way across the Grand Canyon in one day… and back across the next day! 45 miles, 2 days The Florida Keys to Recovery—a 120-mile kayak and bike ride from Key Largo to Key West over 3 days The Cove to Harbor Hiking Marathon— a 26.2-mile hike down the coast of San Diego from La Jolla to San Diego harbor.

To apply for a grant as an Athena (0r Zeus—we give grants to male Survivors too!) OR as a Fundraising Goddess or God, please go to www.projectathena.org.

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a non-profit as a full-time San Diego city firefighter was good fun! Other than that, I have the most amazing team of main volunteers that make this project Athena dream possible for everyone! We truly attract the best people on earth, both as facilitators (my Uber awesome endurance athlete pals, aka Trail Angels) and as Athenas/Zeus/Gods and Goddesses.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Oops. I think I already answered this one. But what makes us different from things like Team in Training is that our Fundraisers and Survivors do these adventures TOGETHER, as one big team, every step of the way. So you are doing the adventure right alongside and as a true teammate for the people, you are helping to live their adventurous dream.

We only take small groups so that we can create a true team magic, and our adventures are booked out well in advance. It’s a pretty special experience for both the Survivors and Fundraisers to do this as one big loving And giving team.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes! We love it here. It’s awesome to be able to hold some of our most popular adventures in the perfectness that is San Diego. 🙂
