Meet Ron and Juliana Fox of SdCocktails in County-wide

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron and Juliana Fox.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ron and Juliana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started this company back in 2017 after a trip to Japan interestingly enough. Seldom did I ever drink whiskey, but this being our first opportunity to travel abroad to a country that just won ‘World’s Best Whisky’ according to the legendary Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible in 2015; I jumped aboard the bandwagon to seek out what was so good about Japanese whiskey.

After finally understanding how to taste it properly and which distilleries make Japanese whiskey, I wondered if San Diego was making any whiskey of their own. A resounding yes was the answer.

From there, a whole world opened up to me in building this business from scratch. The small knit community of local San Diego distillers shared all that there was to making distilled spirits of any kind (whiskey, rum, gin, vodka, etc.), the different processes they use, and what the craft distiller industry meant to them.

The only problem was that there is a limited marketing presence for their industry. Up until 2015, California didn’t even allow local distillers to even serve cocktails or sale bottles directly to consumers while still having to spend thousands of dollars on building their distilleries and warehouses. Fortunately, we all know that the trajectory of the beer industry was inevitably going to be followed by the local craft distillery industry.

With that long-term outlook in mind, I threw my hat into the arena for being one of the premier distillery tour operators San Diego has to offer for tourism; and one of many voices showcasing #DistilledBySanDiego local distilleries and their brands to the world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road is quite literally being paved as we speak. We are in uncharted territory with building a tour operator business around the local distilled spirits community. We often look to the local distiller community for insight, advice, inspiration, and collaboration opportunities whenever feasible. The struggle is a lack of information (aka marketing) of distilled spirits being made right here at home by 20+ active Type-74 Craft Distiller licensees within the County, but we do feel the word is getting out more often.

Tell us about your business.
Our mission is built on educating, promoting, and advocating for San Diego producers of distilled spirits; and where you can go to enjoy them to appreciate this growing local industry a little better. This mission is driven by a love for San Diego County and enhancing tourism within the community.

We are a shuttled tour company showcasing local San Diego distilleries and their distilled spirits. The part of our company vision we are most proud of is that we truly want to enhance tourism within San Diego via the local distiller community. Meaning that we are not only proud to have been born and raised here in this beautiful town, but that we also love the flourishing craft cocktail community that is slowly starting to embrace more and more local type 74 craft distilled spirits outside of the much bigger name brands.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Each year I feel we are growing the SdCocktails brand. With that said, success markers I look for are when we are challenging ourselves to do something new. From video editing our vlogs to constantly rebuilding our website to learning how to make new cocktail recipes; the more I feel a necessary skill vital to building our brand becomes difficult, the closer we are to understanding how to do it and can add it to our tour experience or cocktail festival experience.
