Meet Ron Sparks and Lauren Sparks-Livingston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Sparks and Lauren Sparks-Livingston.

Lauren and Ron come from a three-generation family of full-time San Diego Realtors. Ron began his real estate career selling homes in Santee and El Cajon in 1983 (his first home sale in Santee was for $72,000). His long career has been varied and successful, working as the Director of Real Estate Education for Coldwell Banker, managed the #1 ranked Coldwell Banker Affiliate office in the world (in Bellevue, WA), and later the General Sales Manager for CBBain, a large regional brokerage located in Seattle, WA. After moving back to his hometown in San Diego, Ron worked as the Regional Manager for Berkshire Hathaway Home Services (San Diego and Riverside Counties). Lauren graduated from SDSU with a business degree and started selling real estate on her own after graduation–and with no help from Dad! In fact, she shocked the family when at age 18, she announced she had passed her real estate exam, and decided she was going to be a Realtor. She quickly excelled at her chosen career, highlighted  by her repeat appearances on several top-rated HGTV programs (Bang for Your Buck and House Hunters). She was heralded as “HGTV’s San Diego Expert”.

In 2015, Ron was contemplating leaving management at Berkshire, when Lauren approached him with the idea of selling real estate together. “Let Daughter and Dad Sell Your Pad!”… she was very persuasive, “the way daughters can be”, says a smiling Ron, and Two Sparks was born. Ron and Lauren then set out to create their own unique space in the real estate market. From the outset, Two Sparks wanted to be different, bold, and recognizable. They began with a unique for sale sign, featuring a round shape and modular components (“Sort of like a retro Nelson Ball Clock” said Ron). They then purchased an Ice Cream Truck and converted it to the “Two Scoop Coupe by Two Sparks Group” giving out free ice cream at their open houses and other events. “What says Neighborhood, Homes and Kids better than an Ice Cream Truck?” said Lauren. Most importantly though, the ‘Two Scoop Coupe’ is used to support various children’s charities, such as ‘Team Parker For Life’ (finding the cure for childhood cancers). Two Sparks provides the truck and all the ice cream the kids (and their friends and families) can eat.  Lauren explains, “It’s always a big hit… and a such a wonderful, fun way for us to give back to the community”.

Finally, they have pioneered an original and bold new real estate video concept. To help people quickly and easily understand how the real estate market is doing in their area, Lauren and Ron produce “The Two Sparks Real Estate Weather Report”. The video report is only 1 minute in length, and is updated monthly. The video mimics the daily weather reports one might see on T.V. on any given day. “The idea was to give the consumer accurate information about the market, but in a very relatable, easy to understand format” said Ron. Lauren is the host of the Real Estate Weather Report, and they say it has been very well received. And by the way, yes, they use their exclusive formulas to also ‘forecast’ the changes that might be coming to the market, “with pretty high accuracy as well” smiled Ron. “After all, a weather report is only as good as it’s forecasting!”

Has it been a smooth road?
The Ice cream truck sometimes breaks down! Haha. In truth, it’s been a very smooth road… while you might expect some bumps when family members enter into a high-stress industry like real estate together, we actually get on famously. There is a ton of mutual respect, and always plenty to do, so there’s not much area for conflict. We also genuinely love what we do, as hackneyed as that sounds. If there’s an obstacle, whether in our business or with our escrows, we just put our heads together and get it done… and always try to laugh along the way.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Selling real estate in San Diego County, and California, in general, is both blessed and cursed. Home sales are most often plentiful, even in tougher times… but the competition is extremely fierce, you MUST find a way to be heard above the din, to set yourself and your business apart from others in the same space. But with hard work, determination and the desire to become EXCELLENT at your craft, where better to find success in real estate than San Diego? Despite the chatter about our affordability (we’ve been talking about this subject the 35+ years I’ve been in the business), many people want to move here, natives want to stay here, and we just don’t have enough supply for everyone. So it looks to us like real estate will remain a hot commodity, and for many years to come.
