Meet Ryan Andrews of Prohibition in Gaslamp District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Andrews.

Ryan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started when my best friend and roommate came home and told me his bartender at his family’s restaurant in SF quit. I had just moved to the bay area to pursue a second degree and was working at trader joe’s and hating life… I jumped in head first with no idea what I was doing but quickly started educating myself on spirits and cocktails and a few years later and a few trips around the globe I ended up in SD working at Craft and Commerce and really started to hone my craft. I, then, opened and managed the first coin-op and after that went on to consult on a few different projects till I took up the bar management position at Prohibition SD’s first Speakeasy Cocktail and live music venue.

When GBOD Hospitality acquired Prohibition in Jan 2017, I was promoted to Beverage Director for the company and oversee and design the Bar programs at all our current venues.

Has it been a smooth road?
There’s always struggles when you’re pursuing your passion, spirits, cocktails, and bar culture wasn’t my first love by any means. But it’s become my obsession in addition to running the bar programs for GBOD I also started my own spirits company and have a line of cocktail bitters on the market under the label R&D – research and development. It has been an interesting journey to get where I’m at now and not without sacrifice but I love what I do and the long hours, long weeks, and stress levels all balance out when we open doors to a new spot, unveil a new cocktail menu, or just see our friends enjoying what we’ve created.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Prohibition story. Tell us more about the business.
GBOD stands for Go Big Or Die… It’s the ethos of this company and it’s how we conduct ourselves in our pursuit to be the very best that we can be in our industry. We want to offer the best product, the best experience, the best memories when you visit our establishments. Our bar programs are all well thought out and incorporate all house made ingredients, fresh produce, and premium hand selected spirits, liqueurs, cordials, and bitters… We pride ourselves in creating something unique and new to the downtown SD bar and restaurant scene.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see more locally owned and operated establishments focusing on very directed concepts. I see big corporate chains getting pushed out of the downtown area as people palates evolve and change. My favorite quote in life is from Steve Jobs Stanford Commencement address and he said “people don’t know what they want until you show it to them” we here to show people something new, something different, something better… I guarantee people will love it…
