Meet Ryan Hughes of Bull Oak Capital in Little Italy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Hughes.

Ryan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After working as a Financial Advisor for Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, and Charles Schwab in Los Angeles, I decided that I needed to become an expert in finance to truly service my clients. I went to UCLA Anderson in Fall 2011 to complete my MBA program where I focused on quantitative finance. While there, I engaged in a graduate research project where I (with the help of several professors) backtested and created an investment strategy that would ultimately serve as the backbone and launching pad for Bull Oak Capital. In January 2014, I moved to San Diego and launched the firm as a Registered Investment Advisor.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it certainly has not been a smooth road. I moved to San Diego with no book of business and no network. Starting this firm has been one of the most challenging endeavors I’ve undertaken. However, now that it is successful, it has also been the most rewarding.

It took me nearly 18 months before momentum began to move in my favor. I accomplished this by keeping my head down and refusing to give in. I simply tried to be the loudest person, telling my story to anybody that would listen.

Bull Oak Capital – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We provide financial planning and portfolio management services to professionals and individuals. We like to think that our financial planning process is extremely thorough and actionable.

Our investment strategy is an evidence-based investment strategy, which means that we invest our clients funds based off of hard, proven data. Put simply, we try to do well for our clients.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is being able to live the life I want to live. I don’t want the fastest car nor the most expensive watch. Instead, I want to live a fulfilling life where I can provide for my family and enjoy my time with them.
