Meet Samantha Anderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Anderson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started doing a variety of art at a very young age and continued it throughout high school. In Jr. High, I was introduced to a new passion of musical theater which consisted of acting, song, and dance; all different types of art and expression.

When I enrolled in college, I pursued theater as well as continuing in my other passions. In 2015, I graduated Azusa Pacific University with a Bachelors in Theatre Art accompanied by a Minor in Art with Concentrations in Ceramics. I then moved to San Diego and was hired by Kaman’s Art Shoppes at the San Diego Zoo where I fell in love with more art! Face Painting, Henna and Glitter Tattoos.

I now provide private and group art instruction, create personalized projects, and work private & company events as a face painter and henna tattoo artist. Along with this, I also teach group drawing and painting classes at Michael’s Craft Store. I absolutely love what I do and how I get to share these passions I have for art!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say my journey up until now has been pretty smooth. When I was first looking into doing parties on my own and creating a name for myself, I found Lucia Lopez with “Fun 4 Kids Entertainment” on Craigslist. While she was looking for another artist to help grow her already established business, she not only took me under her wing and helped get me some of my first bookings, but she also taught me some of the key elements of what it means to own my own business with relevant pricing, insurance, festival info, and still today she is a big business reference and friend when it comes to my work.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Being able to work with Kaman’s Art Shoppes at the San Diego Zoo, I was able to learn skills at a rate that I wouldn’t have known otherwise. Now doing parties and events every week, I am able to constantly create new and exciting Face Paint and Henna Tattoo designs, Balloon Twisting creations and apply Glitter Tattoos daily to many children and adults! And, my services are not limited to weekends only!

I also enjoy adult parties that have me teaching students to paint! A few years back, I was hired my Michael’s Stores (particularly the one in Rancho San Diego) where I was able to practice my skill of teaching Acrylic Painting. Now I teach individual privates as well as Paint & Wine nights in client’s homes and it’s a wonderful accomplishment when you leave a room full of people who are proud of what they’ve created!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I don’t see my specific business changing too much in the future, but I would like to do more festival type gigs and be more involved with the community events. As for more subtle things, I do see my business adapting to the trends within the art form(s) – new techniques, better quality supplies, new designs, etc. This industry is always applying new things, trends, and ideas, which I plan to follow if applicable in growing my business in a positive way. I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish thus far and I’m excited to continue to grow my business!
