Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha McBee.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Samantha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I first started off in high school. Taking photography as an elective with a film camera learning to develop my own film and printing in a dark room. I used my camera as a pass to wander around campus and even sneak off lunch early, not knowing at the beginning how much photography was really going to influence my life.
After high school I started Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara to further my education in photography. I knew a regular university wasn’t going to work for me, never did well sitting in a classroom for so long. With Brooks, the classrooms were mostly hands on and pushed your creativity along with drilling technical skills I didn’t think I would ever use, but years later I found myself using them.
Receiving my degree in 2008, I moved down to Los Angeles thinking I’ll find a job right away. The only job that called me back was Lifetouch Portrait Studios. For a year I traveled back and forth between the portrait studios in Target and JCPenny’s all around the Los Angeles area before stumbling on a studio manager position in Pasadena.
Duke Photography is a studio nestled in beautiful downtown Pasadena specialized in glamorous, high-end weddings. It was from there I stumbled into weddings and haven’t bothered getting out.
I learned how it was to work with amazing clients and not so amazing clients. The work behind the scenes on what it takes a run a full time wedding photography studio and working as a team with other vendors. It takes a village to create the beautiful weddings you see across social media and magazines.
Years later, I started getting tired of the city life. I decided to move back home to San Diego in 2014 to be closer to family and start my own business of running a photography studio. Starting from the ground up, it’s been a slow process building up who I am as a photographer, finding my own style and putting a stamp on something that I can say is Samantha McBee Photography.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I did so much stumbling on the road to becoming photographer and just in general to be the person I am today. I still continue to stumble here and there, but as the years go by I’ve learned good things come from falling down, so no I don’t fall as hard and don’t take as long to get back up.
Please tell us about Samantha McBee Photography.
Samantha McBee Photography specializes in wedding and family portrait photography. My photography is known for its organic, candid style utilizing the beauty of nature to create romantic photographs.
Making people feel comfortable in front of the camera is my main goal. When you’re relaxed and happy in front of the camera with people you love, people shine and that’s when you can create beautiful portraits.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would’ve probably focused more during school, learning the business more on the business side of this industry.
