Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Milner.
Samantha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My interest in video was first sparked after taking a documentary journalism course in photo and video. I originally took the course to learn more about a photo (as my major was in Fine Arts), but I ended up being much more interested in video. I was taken with the idea of capturing and telling a real story with motion. I began making small documentaries for non-profits to tell their stories and help promote their causes, however that wasn’t exactly paying the bills! I began shooting weddings to make some money on the side but ended up falling in love with it. There was something so powerful to me about capturing all the emotion that falls on a wedding day and then telling that story for the bride and groom to watch forever. Now, 4 years laters, weddings are my main business. I love to make each story unique and create work that is individualized for each couple!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always moments of doubt when you start your own business. The wedding industry in California is huge, and It’s hard not to compare yourself on social media with so many talented vendors out there. In the first couple years, I would go on social media and think to myself, “why bother, I can never be like this”. However, one day I realized I needed to have a mindset shift. When I go on social media now instead of telling myself, “I can never achieve that”, I look for inspiration and intentionally have thoughts of thankfulness that humans are so darn creative.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SJ Videography – what should we know?
I’m a wedding and branding videographer. I specialize in telling stories in an authentic way that emotionally connects to the viewers. I’m most proud of being able to successfully tell stories in a way that moves people. I love when people get emotional watching my films because it feels like I’m helping someone communicate a special part of who they are.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband is my number one supporter and helper! We met during the documentary film course and he actually taught me much of what I know about the video. Although he has a full-time job, he is always there to help me on wedding days no matter how much the work! I’m forever grateful to have someone like that who has my back running this business.
