Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Bernal.
Hi Sandra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Where to begin… I have always had an interest in photos since I was about 13 weather that’d be taking them or getting them taken of me, but it wasn’t until my late 20’s that I decided that I wanted to make a business out of it. You see growing up we didn’t have much photos of us as a family or at all really. When my father passed away when I was 10 I didn’t realize how important it was to me that we should have had so many memories through photos. And unfortunately I only have 1 to 2 photos of how I remember him. So this is when I decided that I wanted to create beautiful memories not only for my family and children but for everyone. You see memories last forever but they do fade overtime and to have photos of certain times in your life you can relive those memories and also share them with generations to come.
I started learning basic camera settings through YouTube until I felt like I understood it well, then I went on to buying my first camera which was a canon rebel t6, and asking friends and family to shoot them for free while using the skills I had learned via YouTube. Once I felt like I was decent I decided to start small and doing FB ads to get clients for a small price. So here we are 2 years later ( and boy do I still have so much to learn) but I decided to invest in myself and had a mentorship with Shelby (IG: bellebrooke photography) which is one of my greatest inspirations and I learned a lot. I also invested in my first full frame camera and a state of the art lense which I absolutely adore now! I still have so much to learn and am not where I want to be yet. I’m fairly new and haven’t got my name out there as so many other photographers have. But I will continue to strive to be the best that I can be and reach as many people as I can to create beautiful memories for them whether it be family session, engagement, boudoir, or birthdays. I love lifestyle photography the most just something about candids that brings me so much joy, a memory in time and place rather than a posed photo. 😊
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I can say it has been both, smooth as in the learning curve. When you love something you do it comes naturally and easily. The struggles for me I would say are getting my name out there especially when starting off is when the Pandemic hit. So I would say it has been more difficult than it would have been a couple years back.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a photographer based out of Murrieta, CA. I specialize in family photography. I also do engagement and boudoir sessions. I want to get into weddings once my littles are older and I have more free time. What am I most proud of, I would say I am most proud of my determination for going for what I wanted. It’s not easy to build something from scratch not knowing the outcome. I am still a work in progress till this day but improving myself along the way. I think what sets me apart from others is my final image. My style is very colorful and bright I also like the deep and moody feel so it can go either way.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be when my grandparents came to visit from Nicaragua, those where some of my favorite memories. Unfortunately they have both passed and I also have very little photos of them. ☹️
